Burglars broke into the Wellington Museum on Friday night and stole the collection of gold and silver coins and medals, valued at £9O. Thomas Jones, an old resident at Waipou, Otago, was buried in the Canton Company’s mine, owing to the collapse of part of a tunnel. He was dead when got out. , At the Chamber of Commerce Con- ji ference at Dunedin on I’uesday, it was resolved— ■“ That it is of the first importance that there should be absolute freetrade of products between the several colonies on tbe basis of a Customs union, or reciprocal arrangements for exchanging specific products.” Mr G. G. Stead, of Christchurch, read a paper on immigration, in. which he urged that the introduction of immigrants on a large scale would tend to increase the wealth of the colony and benefit the existing population. The impression that it would decrease wages was erroneous. Papers were read on hills of lading and general average, and on fire insurance. The discussion was adjourned till Thursday evening.
