BURNT TO DEATH.
following upon the sad accident by 1 which Mr Lord, M.L.C., of Hobart, lost his life by a cab horse running away, comes the more tragic death of Mr J. Gr. Ramsay, M.L.0., of Adelaide, On Friday night, 17th, he was going into Adelaide by the north train, being alone in a first class compartment, when a lamp dropped down on him and burst, the burning oil being scattered all over bis body and face. On the train arriving at Stockport, Mr Ramsay fell out of the carriage on to the platform, with bis clothes ablaze. It was found that he was frightfully burned. The carriage was also on fire, but the flames were quickly extinguished. Mi Ramsay died on Saturday morning, seven hours after the occurrence. His hair and beard were burned off, and his legs, arms, and body charred. Universal regret is felt at the death of Mr Ramsay, who for years carried on a large manufactory of farming implements in the colony. He was for several years in the House of Assembly, and was a commissioner for the colony at the Paris Exhibition of 1878. On return, ing Mr Ramsay was elected as a representative of the Southern district in the Legislative Council, He occupied positions in several Ministries, his last portfolio being that of Chief Secretary in the Playford Government from 18th June 1887, till 18th June, 1889. The accident has directed attention to the system of lighting carriages with kerosene, but it seems to be recognised that this was an unavoidable accident.
