AUCTIONEERS REPORT. TIMAKU. Messrs Gracia, Maclean and Co. report for the past fortnight ending Saturday, as follows: Horses—On the 18th inst., our entry was small, and only a few changed hands. To-day wo entered 34 of all sorts, a fair proportion of these being draughts. Sales were difficult to effect at—for medium to good draughts £ls 10s to £2O, inferior £8 to £l2. Hacks and light harness horses are not much enquired for. Sheep—At the Makikihi monthly sale, on the 13th inst., we sold a line of fat 2-tooth crossbreds at 11s. At Winchester Fair, on the 21st inst., business was confined to a few pens of fat sheep, which we sold at full values. At Washdyke yards the entries continue small, the supply of mutton not being nearly adequate to the demands of the local butchers. We have sold 92 fat ewes and wethers at lls, 25 ewes at 7s, 30 do at 8s lid, 30 do at 9s lOd, 49 fat lambs at 7s 6d, 64 ewes and wethers at 12s 3d, 47 ewes at 9s, 50 do at 9s 3d, 75 2-tootha at 9s 6d, 80 ewes at 9s 3d, 30 do at 10s 4d, and privately a line of prime lambs for freezing. Cattle—Store cattle are exceedingly dull of sale; in fact, only a few head have changed hands during the fortnight. Fat are also difficult to quit. We sold 4 heifers at £4 2s Gd, 3 cows at £3 7s 6d, 2 cows at £4, 1 cow at £5 2s 6d, 12 dry cows at from £1 5s to £2 10s, and privately a small line of fat cattle at equal to 17s per 1001 b. Skins—During the week we sold 1487, including full-woolled, pelts, and lambs, and prices realised for the various classes were highly satisfactory. Fat—We have sold over 4 tons of rough fat, at from £l2 to £l2 10s per ton. Clearing Sales—On the 17th inst. we held a sale at Arowhenua Hotel, of threshing mill, engine, horses, drays, and harness. The threshing plant did not reach owner’s value, and was passed, but horses, etc., sold at full rates, AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Sydney, Jan. 25. Owing to the good season several vessels are loading wheat for England, and it is now expected that further extensive shipments will come forward. The estimate of the wheat yield this season will not be ready for three weeks. The total amount required for consumption in the colony for food and seed is 8,050,000 bushels, Meleoitene, Jan. 25. Owing to drought the maize crop is poor. The loss under this head is estimated at £40,000. ENGLISH MARKETS, ‘ Loudon, Jan. 24. At the wool auctions t'o-day 4400 bales were offered, of which 3900 were sold. Competition was vigorous, and the following prices were obtained : Inferior to good greasy 8d to ll|d ; inferior to average “ wasters,” 14d to 16fd ; inferior to good scoured, I4fd to Is 9£d. New Zealand 4 per cent, inscribed stock, 106 f, active. New Zealand long-berried ditto, ex store, 38s, steady. Sugar, Gorman beet, lls 9d, steady; Java, 15s 3d, nominal, No. T best Scotch pig iron, f.o.b. in the Clyde, 60s 3d, steady. Tallow is flat. Best mutton, 265; ditto beef, 245. New Zealand hemp is dull, and prices are irregular. The latest quotations are from £2B 15s to £29, The Antwerp wool sales closed at slightly better quotations than those obtained at the close of last series. Three thousand five hundred bales were sold. All the Australasian weol was withdrawn from the sales. The Customs authorities have abandoned the rule requiring all wool bales to be marked with the name of the place of origin, and have reverted to the old method.
