THE AUSTRALIAN DOMINION.
Melbourne, Jan. 24. Ihe Intercolonial Conference of the Australian Natives Association affirmed the desirability of a Federal legislature, consisting of Governor-General and two Houses, the members of one house to elected by the legislature, and of the other by the people of the various colonies, each colony to be- represented equally in one House at least, An amendment that the Governor-General be selected by the Crown was withdrawn. Lord Hopetoan in the course of an address to the Natives Association, said that the feeling of respect for the colonies was growing strongly at Home. ( Although it was true that expressions of disrespect lor and unfriendliness toward the colonies bad been made in the House of Commons he could assure them that such expressions did not proceed from responsible or moderate men, but were merely the effusions of irresponsible frivolous men, who were always ready to raise s cheer'even if their utterances endangered the future of the British Empire, Ihe responsible statesmen of Great Britain desired to draw closer the bonds of union between the Mother Country and the colonies.
