ACCIDENTS.
At Auckland, on New Year's Day, the chief officer of the barque Peru, Alex. Tythea, 52, while slightly under the influence of liquor, fell out of a boat and was drowned. He leaves a wife and family in Aberdeen. A crop of accidents happened on New Year's Day, three in the descent of the Elevation Hill, near Picton: One case is that of a lady who sustained a compound fracture of the leg, another a fracture of the base of the skull. A fourth is reported from Onamahutu, where a donkey frightened a cart horse and caused a capsize, and a woman who was driving sustained compound fracture of bath arms. :
When riding at the Rangiora sports on New Year's Day Fenlon, the champion bicyclist, fell and broke his collar-bone. A man named Thomas Powell was killed on the railway close to Pukeuri, jnear noon. The body was found lying close to the railway with the head cut off. A train had parsed along the line, but the driver said that he did not see anything on the line as he passed. The body was found on a road line that crossed the railway, and it is possible that, on account of the cattle stops, it would be difficult for anyone to be seen. The deceased was seen walking along the road near the railway in the afternoon. He had formerly been in Wellington. An inquest was held and a verdict of " accidental death " returned,
By a fire at Puketeraki, near Waikouaiti, Qtago, Savina, Louisa, and Madeline Ashwell, a half-caste mother and two daughters, were burnt to death ?it midnight on Tuesday. George Ashwell, the father of the family, was taken into Dunedin hospital severely burned, and died from the effects. At Grey mouth races on New Year's Day, in the Grey Valley Stakes, Patrician fell and' rolled over his rider, E. Do '■, who was fataliy injured, dying tartly afterwards.
