THE EXHIBITION.
Dunedin, Dee. 16 Mr SooU, huperiatend* nt of the South 1 Australian court, intends making a tour of tha colony to inspect its dairying industries in tlie interest of (he colony he represents. He will start on the lour after the Christmas holidays. A movement is on foot to induce the Premiers of all the co ! onies to assemble in Dunedin about the middle of February in order to hold an informal conference on various subjects of intercolonial concern. Saturday’s attendance was 3026 paid admissions, A large crush of Australian visitors is expected this week.
f 1-w-o more a great attraction will be offered to the public in the New South Wales couit, for here it in that a representation of the Fish river or JanoUn caves will be disc'osed to the public g«z*. Most tourists know that these caves are situated in the Bine mountains, near the mining township of Lithgow. Ever since their discovery they have attracted some thousands of sightseers and they, ate certainly amongst the chief wonders of the .mother of Australia. For (heir anisic on a acaleof magnificence and elaborateness never before attempted the services of Mr W. J. Wilson the wellknown scenic artist, were secured by the New South Wales Government at the instance of Mr Oscar Meyer. Five bays ars taken up in depicting the Jenolan caves «nd their reproduction is h marvellous representation of the original. When they come to be opened, as they will be either to-morrow or the d«'y afto r , visitors on entering will hardly believe lhat they are really under ground. The whole tableau is s’rikingly rea’istio in all Us surroundings, and the idea of perspective which it affords is immense. Hoof, sides, and flooring resemble nature, and the underground river running through the caves, for the illustration of which real water is used, completes a series of views the marvellous grandness of which requires to be seen to show what artistic skill can do in the apparent reproduction of the natural. As (he visitor goes from one cave into another he cannot help believing that he is taking a subterranean stroll through chambers of enormous extent, beautiful to a degree that no word painting could adequately describe, lu one cave he will see a column bearing a striking resemblance to the Madonna and Child and ih another an enormous column which hag bee* seyored in (wain either by an earthquake or subsidence of the earth, and by far the greatest portion of the column hanging down from the cave roof, while the base lies over in another direction. There caves will prove one of the greatest attractions at the Exhibition, and they will bo free to everybody

The members of the Invercargill Centra} School Tourists’ Club, comprising pupils of the fifth and sixth standards to the number of 20, are on a visit to the Exhibition, under the charge of two masters. They camp out on a paddock at Nevada, Whi e in camp they are under military discipline and keep guard, etc. Th y stay in town for a week. The E:ff«l tower at the Exhibition was opened this evening, when a number of Commissioners and visitors were conveyed to the top. The lift worked very smoothly, and everything passed off without a hitoh, The hsigbt from the ground to the platform is JLOO feet.
