THE LABOR REVOLT.
London, Dec. 12. It is expected the demand of the coal norters will be conceded. The stokers ere, however, striking. Dec. 13. The strike has began at all the gasworks in South London, and a Committee are endeavoring to arrange for the dispute to bo settled by arbitration. The Mansion' House ond Mr H. Libouchere, M.P., condemn the strike. The Metropolitan Company has engaged 3000 hands, and expect to wio the struggle if the ■cofti porters fail to block the coal supply. Tho ! Company are arranging for Hamburg bottoms.
Tho masters ItaVe conceded 10 centimes to the nail makers, who were out on strike.
The pickets of the gas strikers are very active, and the police permit persuasion to be used in order to prevent violence. The strikers offer to accept a monthly engagement, but tho company have declined to re-engage, at the same time informing them that their request has come too late. Dec. 14.
The gas strikers’ pickets haye been withdrawn, as it was found impossible to prevent the engagement of black’oga. One bundled and sixty Victoria dockers have struck owing to non-union carmen and companies resisting tho demands made,;
The seanlen and'firemen have agreed to join with the union in boycotting the gas' company which Ins arranged for bringing coals from Hamburg, Tho gas company has applied for warrants against 30 of the porters engaged by them who left without leave;
The gas companies have been successful in replacing (be hands out on strike. Owing to the strike at the Victoria docks it is probable that the export trade will be hampered. The police are acting strictly in repressing any disorder. The gas companies are confident that they will be able to obtain a sufficient coal supply iu spite of the efforts made by the coal porters to prevent it. Sydney, Dec. 13.
At a meeting of shipowners to-day it was resolved that for the safety of the ship and passengers it was absolutely necessary that the captain should have supreme command and full power to adopt any check or precaution in the engine room he deems necessary, and it was also resolved to support, financially or otherwise, any company attacked by the Engineers’ Association. Melbourne, Dec. 14.
Another phase of the engineers dis. puts has cropped up here. 'Jbe Engineers’ Institute have notified to Messrs Howard, Smith and Co. that the engineers will go out on strike unless e satisfactory explanation is given by the 20th inst. as to tho removal of one of tho engineers of their steamers.
