ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, Dec. 12, It is reported that an Englishman has been arrested at Sebastopol while engaged in sketching the defences of the fortress. Documents are alleged to have been found on him which indicate he is a spy.
Robt, Browning, poet and dramatist, died at Venice on Thursday night from bronchitis and asthma. He had just issued a new volume of pot ms. bit George Bowen, formerly Governor of Now Zealand, Victoria, and other colonies, is about to publish his autobiography. In the despatches quoted are eulogistic references by Messrs Gladstone and Forster and Lord Dufferin to his conduct during the Victorian crisis which occurred in the early part of his administration, Slavic, the Australian pugilist, bus decided, in tho event of his defeating Smith on Sunday week, to immediately challenge Sullivan to fight, within a month, in America, for £SOOO a side, with or without gloves. 1 Captain Jorgenson, who is voyaging round the world in an open boat, has arrived all well at Pernambuco. The feeling is gaining ground that Sir Henry Porkes will succeed with his federation proposals. I'ho epidemic of influenza, which was reported from Berlin and Paris, has appeared at Brussels, but the rumor that London was similarly infected is without foundation. The Earl of Zetland received an ovation on his arrival in Dublin. Berlin, Dec, 12.
The Emperor of Germany has been entertained at a banquet by the authorities of Frankfort. In jresponse to the toast of his health he declared his whole endeavor was to make Germany powerful and respected. Germany saw the value of the fruits of peace, and would strive to the utmost to preserve them, Cairo, Dec, 13. Egypt has entirely abolished the Corvee, Capetown, Dec. 14. Sir Henry and Lady Loch received an ovation on their arrival here to-day, Chicago, Dec. 14. 'A plot has been discovered to murder one of the jurymen selected to try those charged with the murder of Dr Cronin. New York, Dec. 12. During the panic created at the Johnstown theatre by the false alarm of fire, fifteen persons were killed and eighty iniured. Governors of eight Southern States acted as pall-bearers at the funeral of ex-President Jefferson Davis. There were 100,000 spectators.
Information has been received that a Vigilance Committee has captured a camp of outlaws at Wyoming, and lynched eleven of them, AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Sydney, Dec. 13. The want of confidence motion moved against the Parkas Cabinet was defeated by 64 to 52. News has been received from Noumea that five desperadoes, after indulging in bnsbranging for a time, murdered a storekeeper there and then made their escape. It is believed that they have find to Australia. Dec. 14. Lord Carrington, Governor of New South Wales, will shortly leaya on a visit to the Dunedin Exhibition, Sir J. B. Thurston, Governor of Fiji, leaves Suva for New Zealand on the 18th inst. Melbourne, Dec. 15. Mr D. Gillies, Premier of Victoria, has had a personal interview with the Premiers of South Australia, Tasmania, and Queensland, with reference to a scheme of federation for defence purposes. The result is that he has promised to work out details of a scheme which it is hoped will be acceptable to all the colonies. Brisbane, Dec, 13. A tribal fight has taken place between Kanakas living near the Herbert River. During the struggle forty were wounded, and of that number it was found necessary to remove twenty - six to the hospital, Hobart, Dec. 18. Parliament has prorogued to May 6tb.
