GERALDINE LICENSING COMMITTEE.
The quarterly meeting of this committee was held in the courthouse, Geraldine, on Tuesday last, at noon. Present Messrs A. White (chairman), W. S. Maaliu, N. Dunlop, M. Connolly, and G. H. Patrick. inspiosoe’s eepoet. The police report upon the licensed houses in the district was read. The report on the Geraldine and Bush Hotels was considered satisfactory. At the latter a urinal blown down was ordered to be re-erected. The repairs and additions to the Crown Hotel, specified by the police in June last as being necessary, had not been carried out.
The license had been renewed on condition that these were effected, and members were of opinion that the committee should cancel the license, as the conditions upon which it had been renewed had not been carried out.
Mr E. Wilson Smith, who appeared for the licensee, objected to the license being cancelled, and stated that the committee had no power to cancel it on the grounds of the repairs not having been executed. He contended that the committee could not grant the renewal conditionally; they must either grant or refuse it at the June quarterly meeting, and having granted it they had no power to cancel it on the above grounds.
The Bench went into committee on the subject, and finally decided to adjourn the meeting for a fortnight, and in the meantime take legal advice upon the matter. The meeting then terminated.
