TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.

TLe monthly meeting of the Timaru Harbor Boord was held on Wednesday. Present—Messrs E. Acton (chairman), Talbot, Tesohemaker, Wilson, Morri«, Ross, Flatman, and Manchester, and Cuptains Woolloombe and Sutler. Members congratulated Captain Woollcombe on his re-appearance after a few absences through an accident. Among the correspondence was the following : From Mr Wiltshire, Western Australia, quoting 2s 9d per foot for 40 jarrah piles. He had not yet beeo able to complele negotiations for the conveyance of the piles to Melbourne.—After soma discussion it whs resolved, on (ho motion of Mr Ross, seconded by Captain Sutter, that the ironbark on hand ba used, charred and painted with tar and sulphur. From Mr J. Darling, Oct. 11th, stating that there was no show of the tug on the stocks yet, but the plans and sections were in a forward state. There had been a rise in the price of iron, and there wns a good deal of excitement in the iron trade, but he hoped this would not interfere with the construction ef the tug. From the Waimate County Council, agreeing to allow their cleikto collect the harbor rate in that county. From Meßsrs Perry and Perry, re collection of rate, recommending that the clerks of Waimate and Mackenzie County Councils be appointed collectors in those countioa, and that the board's secretary ba also appointed a collector for tho«H counties, and sole collector for the Geraldin* County and the Birough of Timaru.—After some discussion Messrs Jackson and Bonks were appointed collectors for Waimate -and Mackenzie Couutiea respectively, and Mr Tennent (the Board's secrotary) for Timarn and Grtmidine,

From Sergt.-Major Mason, respecting the practice of bathing in Caroline Bay, which had been complained of. —Tt was resolved—" That it be a recommendation to the police to allow bathing in proper costume from the north wall to about the shoot, from 5 to 8 a.m., and 5 to 7 p.m." The harbormaster reported the arrival of 17 Bteam and 9 sailing vessels, and the departure of 17 steam and 5 sailing vessols during October. The weather during the month was very fine. Captain Sutter moved, and Mr Rsss seconded—" That from the Ist January next the cost of dredging the harbor be charged to the general account inßtead of the loan iccouot, as at present."—The coat of dredging, it was stated, inc'uding £250 for insurance, was about £ISOO a year.—The motion wa& withdrawn for tho present, after a little discussion.—lt was mentioned that the work done by the Oamaru dredge was filled up in eighteen months.

The eneinear, Mr F. W. Ma reliant, reported as follows:—"North Mole: The outer curve is nearly finished now. About 300 ft of the wall remain yet to complete the contract, up to the 350 ft entrance width.—Discharge of heavy weights at wharf: I have given tbis subjecj my connideration in connection with the proposal to bod certain ironwork for the refrigerating company, of the estimated weight of 9 tons. I could erect an outrigger -jib on the Samson crane with the aid of a pair of ironbark piles and some wire rope, and hs plumb the hatch of a vessel like tho Fifeshire. The gear I should icaproviso would be strong euough to hoist loads of 12 or 15 tons, and I recommend that this course be adopted in preference to riggiug shear legs, etc., if the harbor board is to undertake the discharge of heavy weights.Slip: Timber tor the ways arrived last meek, so we shall be able to push on with the extension of. the slipway. Dredging : Since last meeting the Taniwha has dredged and discharged 2000 tons of spril and 166 tons rocks and boulders. We had a mishap in the slewing goar, which delayed us 5 days," It was agreed that ths board should not undertake to land the machinery alluded to, but would prepare the appliance, and let it to the person contracting for the landing. The wharfage retorn for the four weeks ended October 12th was £483 3s 3d. The secretary stated the return for the year was about £IOOO more than last year. Accounts amounting to £lß4l 6s 9d were passed for payment, and the board rose.
