THE DOMINION PROPOSALS.
Melbourne, Nor. 11. Speaking at the Mayor’s inaugural dinner, Sir Henry Loch said that while highly approving of Sir* Henry Parkes’ Dominion, proposal, it. was a question which the people of the colonies most decide when the time is ripe, Lord Carrington would gladly hail the j advent of an intorprpvincial union as a step towards a larger federation of equal right, common citizenship, and due allotment, of respppeibility in all dealings with other nations.;which would | give permanent security to, future, .relations between Qreat Britain and Australia. The Earl of Kintorp said..,theft ho, recognised the difficulty in arranging' the details pf the scheme, some tew of which were of an important .character, and it would have to be adjusted before complete federation was obtained. j He was,, however,, convinced that ,grept as these difflculties might be ihey faded to insignificance. compared with the grand consnmniation in view, Sir. Wm., Robinson said he, was satisfied that federation w«S (bound to come, and (bat the destiny of. Australia demanded it, . Mr Gillies, the Premier, declared that the Government of Victoria would leave no step nntaken to enable this colony to join a thorough federation union. 1 The people, of .Victoria would, ho said, sink the . smaller of .miserable rivalries and would, take part at Ihfl.earliest possible moment in a conference on the subject.
