MANITOBA.
A Mr Turnbull, a native of North Britain, a large landowner in Manitoba, was recently in England fer the purpose of buying a lot of Shorthorns to take out to Canada. The picture he gave the North British Agriculturist of farming in Manitoba was not a very good one. Tou can get plenty of land, he said, in Manitoba for nothing, but it may be fifty or a hundred miles, or more, from any railway station; You can grow big crops of wheat upon it, but you will very often get a great part of your wheat destroyed by frost. And after you get your wheat, at great expense, conveyed to the nearest railway station, you may find that some corn factor has arranged with the railway company for the monopoly of buying all the wheat laid down at that station. This corn factor tells you that your wheat is frosted, although it may never have felt a touch of frost, and he offers you the price ef frosted wheat for it; and as it is a matter of Hobsons’ choice with the seller you have to take it. Labor is not to be had ik Manitoba at less than famine prices when it is wanted, that is, during the summer; and it can be had for nothing at any other time, that is, during the winter. Finally, Mr Turnbull expresses the most decided opinion that if farmers in the Old World would live as economically and work as hard as they have to do when they go to Manitoba they would never find any necessity for going so near the setting sun.
Abbitai op thb Tainxti.— The B. M.S. Tainui arrived at Lyttelton on Sunday night from Hobart. No lickness prevailed during the voyage. She only brought a email mail, but had a full complement of passengers. She left London on Sept, 11th, seven days late, owing to the strike. During her stay in London the Xainui’s crow, firemen and deok hands, went on strike. She is therefore now manned with non-union hands.
