The Shaw Saville Company’s steamer Coptic returned to Rio de Janeiro yesterday, leaking. She has been ashore on the Brazilian coast.
The Paris correspondent of the Daily News says M. Freycinet has decided to double the strength of the Sixth Army Corps, stationed on the German frontier. Dr J. G. Kenny, M.P. for South Cork, states that the funds obtained by Mr Dillon’s colonial tour will support a monthly average of over five hundred evicted families. Details of expenditure on the Plan of Campaign are promised at the conclusion of the struggle. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s cargo steamer Duke of Westminster will sail from Gravesend on the 6th November for Cape of Good Hope, Algoa Bay, and New Zealand, The steamer is estimated to carry 26,000 carcases of mutton, 100 tons of dairy produce, and 5000 bales of wool. The K.M.S. Aorangi arrived all well at Plymouth to-day with her cargo of frozen meat in good condition. Lord Brassey, speaking at a dinner at the City Liberal Club, upheld unionism, and spoke in terms of high praise of tbe conduct of the dock laborers during the recent strike. Mr S. O, Buxton, M.P, for Poplar, who took a prominent part in supporting the strikers, condemned the attitude and language of Mr Norwood, chairman of the dock committee.
The brother of the Earl- of Galloway accompanied him into the dock during the trial of the latter for assault on a girl, Sir James Fergusson was among those present, Tbe Bench unanimously acquitted the accused, the decision being received with applause. The Tenants’ League Convention has been postponed.
Tbe audit of the strike accounts is being delayed by the careless manner in which they were kept, but tbe statement that there is a surplus of £7OOO is confirmed. It is the intention of those having control of the money to wait patiently until tbe wishes of the Australian colonies can bo ascertained as to the disposal of this sum.
