RIFLE SHOOTING.

A match between a team from the Timaru Rifles and one from the Geraldine Rifles was fired off at the Geraldine range on Thursday aEternoon. The visitors arrived by Ellis’ express about 1 p-m., and shooting commenced shortly afterwards. The weather was dull, and at the first range slightly drizzling, but the rain soon ceased. • The dull day was found to be a great advantage at the long range, as the sun, which is usually so exceedingly troublesome here,- wa&r hidden behind the clouds. The con* ditions of the match were ten men a side, 200, 300, and 500 yards,- five shots at each range, Wimbledon targets and scoring. Only seven men of each side turned up, however, and the match was fired with that number. Corporal G. W. Ellis was in charge of the Timaru party, and Lieut. Ward in charge:of the home team. Some very fair shooting was shown by the winning team. Of the losers Private Pearson came out best, knocking up the fine score of 62. At the 500 yards range he made 24 points out of a possible! 26, The following are the scores:— GERALD INK RIFLES.

The two teams afterwards dined together at ; ; Markham’s Hotel. In the evening one of the , social ; gatherings for which the G-eraldine Hides are becoming famous was‘held In the drillshed. The music was supplied by Mr J. Pigoni, Mr W. M. Patrick acting as M.O. The refreshment table was under the care Of Mrs Scroggie. After enjoying themselves thoroughly/the visitors started for home about 10 p.m
