Thursday Island, Sept. 9. Eastern news per British India Company’s steamer It is reported that slavery of the cruellest form has been permitted by the Rajah of the Island of Lombak. Horrible barbarities are said to have been committed by Arabs on runaway slaves. Twenty-four members of Chinese secret societies have been arrested, six sentenced to death, eleven to be flogged, and in the remaining cases sentence bad not been passed.
Operations against the rebels in Tonquin are progressing steadily and successfully. In a recent eonflict the French troops killed 15 of the rebels.
