AUCTIONEERS' REPORT,

GERALDINE. .Messrs J. Mundell and Co. report sales for the week ending Saturday, 7th September, 1889, as follows : At the Geraldine market on Wednesday the numbers yarded, for the day consisted of 5489 sheep, 85 head of cattle, and 8 pigs. The tone of the market was good, especially in store sheep the supply was in no way equal to the demand. It is our pleasing duty to have to report a revival in the long neglected cattle market. The following are our quotations for the day, viz.:— Sheep Crossbred wethers and maiden ewes, 14s 6d, 11s Id to 10s 9d; crossbred ewes, in lamb, 8s; merino ewes in lamb, 5s 9d; cull merinos, 2s 9d; three-quarter-bred hoggets, 10s 4d to 8s lOd.

Cattle —Stores (fat), £5 15s ; cows (springing), £4 2s 6d, £3 10s to £3 ; 2-year-old steers and heifers, £1 15s; yearling steers and heifers, £l. Pigs Small stores, 11a 3d to 10s 6d.

Skin Sales—-On Monday, at our rooms, Geraldine, we submitted to auction a line of nice quality butchers’ and farmers’ crossbred and merino skins which met with good demand from the trade, and sold as follows, viz.: crossbreds, 5s 7d, 5s to 4s 9d; light weights, 4s, 3s 9d to 3s ,6d; merinos, 5s to 25,6 d. Clearing Sales—On Thursday we held a clearing sale of household; furniture and effects at our rooms.; There was a large attendance, throughout the sale, every lot being disposed* of at satisfactory prices^ timaru. Messrs William Collins and Co. report a small demand for milling, wheat. Tuscan has been sold at 3s 3d, red chaff 3s (on trucks at Timaru), Velvet and hunters white seem to he scarce. Powl wheat is in good demand. We have inquiries for 2000 sacks. In oats we have not heard of a single large line being sold this week. Coastwise they are being dribbled away in small lots at 2s 4d to 2s 6d, 2s 9d f.o.b. Derwent potatoes are worth 80s to 85s f.o.b. Mr Moss Jonas reports a.s follows: — Business continues with fair average; of stock entered at all saleyards, and although the price for sheep is not so high as it was some time back, still if any good lines come forward thay are always disposed of at better prices in proportion to the expense incurred either in the Dunedin or Christchurch markets.

Newmarket Yards —At the Newmarket Yards on Tuesday, he succeeded in selling 42 2 and 4-tooth ewes and wethers at 12s 6d, 48 do at 11s lid, 80 fat ewes at 10s 3d, 60 at 10s, 61 at 11s, 119 hoggets at_ 9s 3d, 220 at 10s, 140 merino ewes in lamb at 4s 6d. On behalf of Mr Talbot he sold a line of steers up to £4 ss; yearlings and 2-year-olds fetched from £1 6s to £2 18s 6d,

Washdyke Yards—He sold 35 fat ewes at 11s, 33 at 10s sd, 57 at 9s 6d, and 140 2-tooths at 10s lid. On August 22nd all he succeeded in selling was one cow at £1 65.-

Pleasant Point.-—At these yards there was a large entry of both sheep and cattle, and, taking things all round, realised good prices. His entry was 863 sheep of all classes and 49 head of cattle. ; He sold the whole of the sheep and 37 head of cattle — 165 fat ewes at 10a 3d, 51 at 10s 6d, 53 at 10a lid, 96 a,t 9s sd, 65 at 9s 4d, 26 at 9s lid, 58 maiden ewes and wethers at 13s, and 54 at 11s 6d, 144 2-tooth ewes and wethers at 10s 6d, 107 at 9a 6d, and 44 full-mouth ewes at 7s. 7 head fat steers and heifers from £5 2s 6d to £2 ss, 8 2-year-old steers and heifers from £1 12s 6d to £2 10s, 10 yearlings at £1 2s, 15 calves at 9s to 14s, 2 pigs at £2 10s each, and 1 at £l. Sheepskins—At his last sale he had a very heavy entry, numbering up to 2460, and it is astonishing what good prices skins are fetching at the present time, crossbreds 2s 7d to 7s; merinos, Is 9d to 4s, He also sold a large quantity of bag-wool from 4d up to per lb. Private Sales —■ He sold for Mr Hedley, of Seadown, 20 head of fat cattle Simmons, Mr John Campbell and others 390 fat sheep from lls to 14s 6d,
