“ Sik, —I have the honor to report for the month ending September 9,1889 Good progress has been made with the various works in hand. The undermentioned have been completed during
the month, viz. : (1) Formation, etc,, Stevenson’s road, Jones’Gully. (2) Stop banks and cuttings, Orari Gorge Road. (3) Reserve fences, Woodbury and Geraldine. (4) Pile driving near Orari Bridge. As directed I obtained a quantity of wil'ow stakes for the latter work, which will be completed in two or three days from date. As instructed I have inspected the lino of road to the proposed mill site. The distance would be about 34 chains, and as the road would require to be shingled with at least 15 yards of gravel to the chain it would be.rather a costly piece of road, owing to the shingle having to be carted i nearly 2 mil- s (all up hill). The roads leading up to the downs on the north side of the bush, were on inspection found to ba a good deal out up by storm water. As Mr Tripp is breaking up the land on the Downs, causing a large amount of traffic, I have had the formation put in fair order and repair. A large timber culvert at tha bend of the bush on one of the above roads caved in. I found on examination it was quite rotten, and therefore had it taken oat and replaced with a 12in pipe (temporarily) so as not to stop the traffic, which is considerable there at present. A portion of Gould’s road, Waihi Flat, is very much cut up by overflow from the big creek. As there is likely;to be a good deal of traffic on this portion, I should advise open crossings to be made for flood water, and road to be fermed between the tyaihi and Orari Gorge road. A large quantity of poisoned wheat has been issued during the month, with satisfactory results. Re gorse on roads : I have sent out a large number of notices, and submit a list of names to whom they haye been forwarded. “ W. Shiees.” lie the culvert hear Waihi Bush, it was decided to let it stand over till the effect of the flood water was seen. It was decided to do the work required at Gould’s road. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £179 0s 5d were passed for payment. GORSE ON ROADS. The amount of work done by each person having gorse growing upon the road facing their property was stated. The names of those haying gorse so growing were read over. Members thought that some decided steps should be taken to compel owners to clear the gorse.
It was decided to issue summonses against four persons who had taken no steps to remove the gorse in accordance with the notice sent. INTERVIEWS. Mr J. Huffey waited on the board with regard to a piece of land, part of the abolished road near his property, asking to be allowed to purchase the same.-—Mr Huffey was informed that the plans abolishing the road was with the boards solicitors at present and when they had been returned the board would, if possible, sell bim the piece of land. In the meantime the land was let to Mr Huffey at a peppercorn rent for two years. Mr Fergusson waited on the board to know what they intended to do with the road leading into the Waihi bush. —Mr Fergusson was informed that the chairman and Mr Metcalf would visit the spot as arranged for earlier in the day. Mr Lewis attended to ask to be allowed to put a gate on the cross road running between his property and Mr White’s. It was decided to allow Mr Lewis to erect the gate below the plantation, provided the consent of Mr Twigg was obtained. Mr Lewis then handed in a letter asking the board to notify Mr Kalman to properly hang or else remove the gates from the road on the north side of the Waihi river.—Decided to give Mr Kelman notice to properly hang the gates before the next meeting of the board, NOTICE OT MOTION, Mr Metcalf gave notice to move at the next meeting—" That it; is the intention of the board at its next meeting to strike a rat© of one halfpenny in the £ on all rateable property in the Geraldine Road District.”
AN ACCIDENT. One of the board’s men having injured his hand while in their service, and thereby lost twelve days, it was decided to pay him for half the time lost. BRIDGE NEAR HILTON SCHOOL.
Mr Kelland moved for something to be done to the bridge near the Hilton school, as the present bridge could not be used in time of flood. The overseer was instructed to report upon the same, The meeting then terminated.
