CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKETS.
At the- Addington Market on Wednesday, fat sheep were in very large supply, and fat cattle were strongly represented. About two o’clock it commenced to rain very heavily. Eat Cattle-—A rather large entry, and made up to a large extent of fairly good beasts. Prices, however, were low, and bidding was anything but brisk. Beat beef made from 16s to 17s per 1001 b, and inferior up to 15s, Cows sold up to £7, heifers up to £8 10s, and bullocks at from £6 to £7 17s 6d.
Fat Sheep—There was another heavy entry yarded. The rain had a depressing effect on the sale, and last week’s rates were hardly maintained, —Messrs Matson and Co. sold for Mr J. G. Ruddenklau, halfbred wethers at 12s 6d, and merinos at 6s 6d ; for Hon. L. Walker, halfbreds, mixed sexes, at 13s lOd. Pigs—A very good entry. Prices were decidedly low, and a drop of about 5s a bead was noticeable. Porkers were especially neglected, and were hard to quit at any price.
DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS.
The following is the report for the week ending Wednesday: — Wheat —Wheat is in very moderate request, and the tendency of the market is still towards lower prices. The few parcels that are being sold consist chiefly of choice samples from particular localities. Parcels of ordinary quality are difficult to move at very little, more than fowls’ wheat prices. The latter is in very good demand, and easily disposed of at prices relatively higher than for ordinary. Quotations: Prime milling, 3 s 8d to 3s lOd; medium to good (nominal), 3s 3d to 3s sd; inferior to good whole fowls’ wheat, 2s 9d to 3s 3d (ex store). Oats The slight improvement noticed last week has quickly subsided. Good stout bright feed can be disposed of for shipment, but buyers are not inclined to give the prices obtaining a week ago. During the week at auction a small parcel of 18 sacks prime Canadians brought 2s lOd; another small lot, but not quite so bright, 2s 8d; medium to good feed, 2s 5d to 2s 6d; a line of long tartarians, 2s 8d (sacks extra). Barley—The market for this cereal is almost at a standstill. Maltsters are not buying, except the quality is extra prime. Medium is unsaleable, except at prices a good deal below current quotations. Feed and milling are also difficult to move. Prime malting, 3s 7d to 3s 9d; medium (nominal), Bs 3d to 3s sd; feed and milling, 2s to 2s 9d (ex store, sacks extra). Eyegrass — 1 - Local grown machinedressed, 4s to 4s 6d; undressed, 3s to 3s 6d; Poverty Bay, 5s 6d to 7s (ex store, sacks extra). Cocksfoot: Machine-dressed, 3£d to 3|d; inferior to medium and good, to 3d, Moderate demand.
Potatoes—Oamaru derwents,£4los.
Pigs—Well-fed, !up to 1801 b, 4d to 4|d. Hams, 8d to Bid; rolls and flitches, 6d to 6^d. Chaff Well-cut heavy oaten, £8 15s; medium, £3 to £3 10s. Turnips, 17s. Carrots, 40s. Straw, oaten and wheaten, 40s. Clover and ryegrass bay, 65s to 70s. Butter —No quotations —no demand. Honey, 4|d to 4|d. Cheese—Best Akaroa, 4d to 4£d; factory, 5d to s£d.
Sheepskins—On Monday country dry crossbreds, inferior to medium, brought Is 3d to 3s 8d; do do merino, Is 2d to 3s 8d; medium to full-woolled crossbreds, 3s 9d upwards ; de do merino, 3s 9d to 5s 10d; dry pelts, 3d to Is Id; butchers’green crossbreds, best, 6s 6d to 4s 9d; good to medium and inferior, 4s 8d to 3s 3d; green merinos, 4s 5d to 3s.
Hides—Dry salted, prime, heavy weights, 2|d to 3d; medium, 2?d to 2|d; light, 2d to 2|d; inferior, Hd to l|d per lb. Tallow—A very fair demand continues to exist, and the market firm at late quotations. Prime rendered mutton, 19s to 20s; medium to good, 16s to 18s; inferior and mixed, 12s 6d to 15s; rough fat—for clean fresh mutton caul, 13s 6d to 15s; inferior to medium and good, 9s to 13s per cwt.
DUNEDIN STOCK MARKET. At the Burnside Yards on Wednesday the following business was transacted : Fat Cattle—3ll head yarded, about one-half of them fair to good quality, and the other half very little better than stores. The demand throughout the sale was extremely sluggish, and prices as compared with those of a week ago are from 10s to 20s a head loweri Best bullocks brought from £8 10s to £7 10s; medium £6 10s to £5; light £4lss to £3 10a; best cows brought from £7 7s 6d to £6; medium, £5 10s to £4; light £3 15s to £3. Fat Sheep—The market was fairly deluged. 5135 were penned, of which 750 were merinos, the bulk being crossbreds, principally wethers. Every line was cleared, but prices suffered a decline of fully Is per head. Extra prime crossbred wethers brought from 15s to 16s ; do do, 13s to 14a; medium do do, 11s to 12a; ligh do do, 9s to 10s 6d; extra prime crossbred ewes, 12s to 13s ; do do do, 11s to 11s 6d; ordinary do do, 9s 6d to 10s 6d; light do do, 8s to 9s; merino wethers, 6s to 8s 9d.
Pigs weight bacon pigs and porkers. Bacon pigs (ordinary weights), brought 45s to 525; do do (light weights), 35s to 445; porkers, 24s to 32s ; slips 13s to 17s 6d.
AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Stdnet, August 28. The wheat market is quiet. Chick feed, 3s 3d to 3s sd; New Zealand milling, 3s lOd to 4s 3d; Californian, 4s 4d to 4s 7d; Adelaide, 5s 3d. Flour, New Zealand stone-made, £9 10s to £9 15s; roller-made, £lO 5s to £lO 15s. Oats, feeding, 2s 9d to 3s, market glutted; seed, 3s Id to 3s 2d. Maize, ~3s to 8s Id; plentiful supply. Barley, Gape, 2s Sd to 3s; nominal. Bran is quiet at 9£d, with a declining market. Pollard, dull, 9d. Potatoes, New Zealand, £5; Circular heads, £5 10s. Onions, slow of sale, £l9 to £3O. Butter, imported dairy made, 8d to 9d; separator-made, lOd to la. Cheese, market glutted, 4d to 7d. Bacon, steady, hand-cured, 6£d to 7^d; New Zealand cured, 9d to Hams, Is. Melbourne, August 28. Wheat, firm, 5s 6d. Oats, New Zealand stout, 4s Id. Barley, Cape, 3s 10|d. Peas, 5s 2d. Adelaide, August 28. There is little animation in the wheat market and a fall of Is 6d is expected as soon as the new season’s crop is available. Present quotations are 4s lOd to 4s lUd. Flour, stonemade, £9 15s; roller-made, £lllss to £l2. Oats, 4s 4d. Barley, malting, 4s 6d to ss. Bran, B|d. Pollard, Is Id.
ENGLISH MARKETS
London, August 27.
The Antwerp wool sales opened firm. There was a large attendance, and the opening biddings showed an advance of five centimes for good Eiver Plate. Medium qualities and lambs are unchanged, and inferior descriptions very irregular. The market rate of discount is 3| per cent; bank rate, 3 per cent. New Zealand mutton, Contracts have been made with the French Government for a large supply. August 28. The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 7,960,000 quarters, and for the Continent 244,000 quarters. The American visible supply of wheat is 14,250,000 bushels.
Money is hardening, owing to the expected early advance in the bank rate of discount, for three months bills, to 3 per cent.
