A notice in the Gazette brings the 1 animal known as the oppossum under the Animals Protection Act. Ah application was made at the Auckland Police Court on Wednesday for the issue of an ' order prohibiting the supply of alcoholic liquor to A. K. Greenaway, a young man who recently came into a large fortune upon the death of his father. Greenaway’s case was adjourned. At the champion ploughing match at Invercargill on Wednesday the winner unexpectedly turned up in Thomas Docherty, of Menzies Perry, unknown to fame as a ploughman John King was second, H. King third, A. Galt, who has been remarkably successful this year, fourth. Docherty also took the cup for the champion lot on the field. At the Auckland Police Court recently a charge was heard against J. G. Berry, a country settler, of cruelty to animals. The evidence showed that sixty pigs had been pabked, some on the top of others, in a cattle truck, to be sent 120 miles by rail. When the trucks were unloaded, two nights and a day afterwards, thirteen of the pigs were dead and m a very bad state. It was contended that the offence was committed through an oversight.
