Land Tax.—A meeting, baring for its object tbs formation of an association to advocate the substitution of a land tax for a property tax, is about to be held in Wellington.

, Entertainment at Geraldine.— Another of the popular entertainments lately given by the choir of the Primitive Methodist Church, Geraldine, takes place in that church on Monday evening next. Those who heard the previous ones given will remember the treat then experienced. The one on Monday eyening will be on similar lines, and will conclude with a coffee supper. Waitohi Flat Irrigation ; Poll.—A poll of ratepayers in the Waitoh Flit WaterSupply District will be taken on Monday next, in the Waitohi Flat Reading Room, between the hours of 9 a.u and 6 p.ra., on the proposal of the Geraldine County Council to raise a loan of £2500 for the purpose of constructing irrigation works within tha said district. It is most important that ratepayers should record the r votes. '

I VolUmtbeb Social GATHKBjwa.—A social gathering in connection with the' Geraldine Rifles took place is the drill shed, Geraldine, on Thursday evening last. The attendance was fair. The music was provided by Mr J. Figoni, and Mr A. Bissett acted as M.C. Mrs Soroggie being in charge of the refreshment table. Those present/ appeared to enjoy themselves well, the evening being suitable for dancing. • Assault sr ; A Pbisonbb.—The conviet Patrick Rhine, charged with aggravated assault on another convict, named Fowler, on June Ifltb, was brought before the magistrates at Lyttelton on Thursday and committed tor trial. The 1 evidence showed that there had been a quarrel at Eipa Island during the day. When returning to the gaol Shine, on removing his heavy boots weighing 21b 12oz, bad inflicted seyere rounds on Fowler’s face and head.

After much threatening, hostilities ceased till Thursday morning, whoa the shingles were removed off the roof and the house quite dismantled. The aid of the poliee was invoked on both sides. No bones have been broken.

A circular from the Dunedin Exhibition was read, and it was resolved to exhibit there a quantity of cheese, and the secretary was instructed to obtain from' the secretary to the exhibition the necessary forms, etc. Accounts amounting to £ls 19s 2d were passed for payment. It having transpired that several abn-ihare-hoiders had obtained cheese from the factory it was resolved not to supply non-shareholders in future in less quantities than 5 cwt. It was resolved to call for tenders for the lease of the paddock and whey, for a term of one or three years. The meeting then, after having attended to minor details, adjourned.

The visitors, Messrs Cormack staled they had visited tho school, and found everything working well ; Mr Haatley’s contract had beeo completed. Mr Greaves made an application for a large gate to be erected, including posts, etc. It was proposed by Mr Flutman, neoonded by Mr Cooling, and carried—“ That the chairman write to the Board, asking for the mm of 50s for this purpose.!' Dkakatic Entertainment. —ln our advertising columns it is announced that the Terauka Amateur Dramatic Club give a grand entertainment on the 29tb August to consist of the pathetic two-act dram*, “ Trust Money, or Solomon's w ßiom,” and the farce, “Caught by (he Cuff.” The pieces are flow in irehaaml, and it is expected the entertainment will prove a great succ«hb. Aeowhbkoa Oembtbbt Boaed— The monthly meeting of tho above board took place last night. Present—Messrs Gray (chairman), Mason, Quinn, aud Aspinall (Secretary). The earetakur's report was read. Ho had carried out instructions received re cutting down of trees on High Street frontage and had also procured macrocarpa for a fence. He bad handed to the Secretary £ll 13e 6d for fees and sale of wood. The Secretary reported that the Bank balance to date was £64 15s 7d. Accounts amounting to £ll 3s 6d were passed for payment and the meeting terminated.

Painful Accident.—A painful accident occurred oa Wednesday last to Mr F. Prattiey, junr., of Temaka. He was riding hprae from work along the Swamp toad, and while crossing n culvert his horse shied. The stirrup leather broke suddenly, and Mr Pratll’ey was thrown. F., Geraldine, was held on. Wednesday evening last. There was a good .attendance of members, and Bro, J. W. Pye, N.G., occupied the chair. The rriinutes of the previous meeting wars read and confirmed. 1 Two candidates were initiated as members of the Order. The meeting was a summoned one, called for the purpose of considering the advisability of forming a degree lodge, ss per notice of motion tabled previously by Bro. R. Hammond, P.G, A considerable amount of discussion took place on the proposition, and it was ultimately decided to favor the same. A quantity of routine business was transact. The secretary announced that the gross receipts from the gift auction had been £3l Iss 7d. The lodge having been closed by the N.G., he invited the members to partake of refreshments, and a very pleasant hour or two was spent.
