FOOTBALL.
HAWKES BAY F. SOUTH CANTERBURY. A match between the above took place in Timaru on Thursday, and was won by the Hawkes Bay team by 5 points (one goal and two tries) to 3 points (one goal). Matheson captained South Canterbury and Robson the Hawkes Bay. South Canterbury were the beat in the tight scrums, but their opponents, were far superior to them in loose play, and their passing >dlnd tackling was excellent. Macintosh and Moore, the former at threequarters and the latter at half, were the pick of the South Canterbury backs, Macintosh’s collaring and punting being a great feature of the game. Matheson did some grand dribbling, and often relieved the line by bis rushes. Chisholm, Carr, and Shallard also did good work in the scrums for South Canterbury, Of the! visitors Mcßae, Wi Duncan, and James were the pick of the backs, the former doing some good kicking, while the other two made lots of ground by their running. James obtamedtwo tries, and Mcßae potted a. goal for Hawkes Bay, while Macintosh secured the try for South Canterbury which whs converted into a goal by A. Shallard. Messrs Hoben and Flint acted as umpires for the visitors and home team respectively, aM the Rev. Mr Hoatson acted as referee. In the evening the visitors were entertained at the Grosvenor XHotel by the South Canterbury Rugby Union. They left for Christchurch yesterday, and will play a match there tq-dayl
THE MAORI TEAM IN SOUTHLAND. /The Maoris played a match against Southland at Invercargill on Wednesday, winning it by 5 points to 1. The Maoris played one man short, and during the match, Lee, one of the three-quarters, got one of hie knees twisted, ah old sore, and,,will not be able to play , again during the tour. £BB were taken at the gate. At the dinner after the match, Mr Eyeton, Secretary of the Native tear% mentioned the Brisbane business, and said he thought he would be able to prove to the entire satisfaction of the Otago Rugby Union that there was no truth in the statement that four of the team bad: received money to Ipse the match. He slso mentioned that they had that day played their one-hundredth Rugby match with the following results: — Wins 72, losses 22, draws 6. The Natives played Gore district on Thursday, and won by 16 points to 3, or 6 goals and 1 try to 1 goal. The Natives played 14 men to 16.
