The Executive Council met on Saturday to consider Cbemis' case, but adjourned till Tuesday. •1 he Ahaura section of the Midland Railway is all sublet. About 130 men are on the ground, A man named Charles Hibbend, formerly a wood and coal dealer in Tinakori road, Wellington, was found dead in a paddock at Wadestown on Saturday afternoon. A portion of a packet of " Rough on Eats " was lying beside him, and'a revolver was handy. It is a clear case of. suicide, apparently from a dose* of " Rough on Rats." There is great excitement at Reefton over the prospect's of the Scotia and Inkerman mines. Shares of the former have advanced "to 12s 6d and the latter to 15s and 15s 6d. Three months ago the shares in each company were about ss. Large sums have" been made by investors, in some caseß thousands' of pounds. Speculation is very rife, and the brokers are doing a big business. An inquest was held at Oamaru on Saturday morning on the body of Hannah Crawley, an old settler, aged about 65, who died somewhat suddenly yesterday. Deceased, who was of rather intemperate habits, sold some property in Dunedin a few weeks ago, : receiving £l5O in cash. Beyond making a preterit to her son of £2O no trace of the balance of the money can be discovered. Th 6 fact of her having money attracted the usual parasites, and it is presumed she was eased of her money. The evidence disclosed that the woman was found lying on the floor of a room she occupied, in a semi-insensible state. The verdict of the jury was "death through excessive drinking." It may not be generally known, but it is said to be a fact, that if a man buys another person's book debts he must send to each person owing the said man money a letter notifying that he has purchased the debts, and not only that, but he must register the letter even though the individual so owing money lives in the same town. If the purchaser of the debts ever proceeds in court against any of the debtors, and he has not registered the letter, according to law, the case can be dismissed by the magistrate even though the debt is not denied. A northern Resident Magistrate, gave an intimation to that effect a few days ago.
