FOOTBALL.

1 A trial match under the auspices of 'the S.C. Rugby Union took place at Winchester on Saturday afternoon last. There were a good many spectators present. The weather was splendid for football, but the ground was a trifle slippery after the rain of the previous night. The Probable team, captained by Matheson, were, as far as could be arranged, those who represented the Union atChristchurch, but Messrs C. Moore, Lawrenson, Goodall, Stokes, and Studholme were absent, and their places had to be filled by substitutes. The Possibles, captained by Dyson, played a man short. The first part of the match was of an uninteresting character, being principally a forward scrummaging game. In the second spell the teams warmed up to their work, and some good form was shown. The Possibles held their own exceedingly well, considering that a number of their men were in very poor form for a fast match. The Probables eventually won what was decidedly the best trial match of this season by a goal and two tries (five points) toatry (one point). Macintosh, Perry, and G-. Jones were the scorers for the winners, and W. Stewart for the losers. A Shallard took the kicks for the Probables, and W. Mendelson the kick for the Possibles. Although j the game was a fairly good one the I form shown was very far from what should be seen in an interprovincial mateh, Passing seems greatly neglected in South Canterbury, Among the forwards it is almost entirely ignored. Time after time on the line out forwards got the ball, and instead of giving their backs a show they tried to force their way through, a thing which very seldom " comes off" unless the opponents are very lax in marking their men. With men like Perry and Mendelson behind them to punt into touch a good pass from the line out is very effectual. The packing of the scrums is fairly good, but. there is far too much loafing round for the ball to come their way. Forwards should get into the scrum smartly. Splendid opportunities were given by the backs on both sides on Saturday for a bit of smart following up to have been very effectual, but here the team is weak, and the men will have to play very differently on Thursday next, unless they wish to be well drubbed by their opponents. The following have been chosen to represent South Canterbury against the Hawkes Bay representatives, at Timaruon Thursday next:—-Full back, A. Shallard; three-quarters, Macintosh, Mendelson, Perry; halves, Hart and Moore; forwards, Carr, Chisholm, Dyson, LeCren, Matheson, Pearse, F. Shallard, A. Stewart, and Stokes. Emergencies—Back, G-. Jones; forwards, Brinkman and G-ooch. The following are the Hawkes Bay representatives:—Backs : Liquesene, Lowry, Taku, Wai Hape, James, Friday, Duncan, Williams, and Mcßae; forwards : Morrison, Swan, Robson, Fleming, Trotter, Hiroa, Saunders, Johns, Hawkins, Corbett, Nathaniel, and Ross ; secretary and manager, D. Hoben.

THE MAOEI TEAM. Inveecakgill, Aug. 5. The Maori footballers arrived at Blnfl by the Eotomahana last night. A large crowd gathered at the railway station to meet them this morning, but they did not come on by the first train. They play a match against a Southland team on "Wednesday.
