Mijor Newall in doing eo referred to the object for which the ejap had been contested for. The object was lo encourage members to practice shooting. It was on good shoot- **■ ing they would have to depend in fighting ' against an enemy, but when it was'seen that the honorary members beat the .' volunteers the natural conclusion the public must come to was that they would rather trust' their ‘ defence to ;ho civilians. Of course good shooting' sould only come by practice. - They iould not learn it at drill, and conequontly they could see the necessity if practicing frequently at the target. ?hey must not allow the bon. members o retain the cup. Tho volunteers must

win it'back'again next year,* and that they canid not do without a good deal of practice! He congratulated the hon, members oh having scored a victory, and then handed the cup to Mr Cutten, who thanked the volunteers for it, and also for the way in which they had conducted the shooting throughout. He gave expression to the determination of his team to win it again next year; He then presented Mr N. C. Nicholas with a medal (Mr Culten’a own gift) for having been the highest aggregate f scorer. Mr Nicholas suitably replied, in t the course of which he said that the volunteers would have to attend to their practices bptter if they wanted to win back the (jrip.—Dancing was then resumed, and kept up spiritedly for some time..
