The monthly meeting of the Arowhenna Town Board was held Issti night. Present Messrs E. (chairman), A. Frew, E. YaUeeder, J. Ashwell and JT, T. M. Hayhnrst. .. . MiinyTi:s ¥ , . j The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. COIIISTOItDEJfCI. Correspondence was received From Mr W. Ackroyd, drawing attention to the conditien of the North Town Belt between Tavender’s Bridge aid Mackenzie’s corner, and stating that one side of the road being overgrown with gone and the other much cut up it was difficult for vehicle* to pass.— From Mr Nicholas making a similar complaint.—The matter had been dealt with in Overseer’s report. From the Paymaster-General advising that the sum of £B4sßd, half rates' on Crown Lands, bad been remitted to the credit of the board at the Bank; of N.Z., Temuka. From the Temuka Town Board requesting the board to co-opeiat* with them in arranging for a meeting of the dog registrars of the district for a mutual examination of books and adjustment of fees pertaining te each district.—The clerk to arrange. A memo, was received frem the' Grown Commissioner, stating that the : sum of £43 6s 2d had accrued froM sales of deferred payment lands February Ist, 1888, to January 3lst t .1889; and forwarding a plan upon which he requested might be marked the roads upon which such sum would be expended. From the Property Tax Com-, missioner forwarding copy of roll, Mr J. T. M.. Haybiirst|applied to have his name substituted On the roll - in respect of the properties of the late John Hayhnrst.—Granted.

A memo was received from the. Secretary Christchurch branch of N.Z, Exhibition, asking for the return of subscription list forwarded previously,' and any amounts collected .—The clerk to reply . rBTITION FOB FOOTPATHS. , A petition was received from li householders, praying that the footpath on both sides of Denmark Street • from Studholme Street and Whit* combe Street might be formed for a distance of 2£ chains. The petitioners pointed out that the dray traffic rendered the road very dirty in wet weather. A long discussion ensued re the footpath asked for by petitioners. Messrs Yallehdor and Frew were of opinion that it was' a very necessary work, and should certainly be done, - Mr Ashwell agreed, but considered it a question of ways and means. Hp thought it unwise to embark .on any bht absolutely necessary works.. Mr J. T. M, Hayhurst was of opinion that prior to taking action itV would be better to let the overseer ‘ submit a statement of work likely to be urgently required, and their cost. The chairman drew Attention to the necessity of maintaining the Korth, ; and South Town Belts, and the probable heavy drain upon the finances in consequence of the same. Ultimately it was resolved to permit the overseer to invite tendon for the carting of soil for work required and to submit same at next meeting, of the beard, and also cost of formation.

OTEESEEE’S' KEPOIT. The overseer’# report was read and dealt with as follows ; s r, u To the Chairman and Commissioners' Arowhenua Town Board, “ Q-entleraen, —In accordance with instructions, I have visited on throe occasions daring the month the North Town Belt, with 9 view of ascertain* ingthe repairs required. The rdad from Mr Brown’s corner to the farm now in the occupation of Mr Dalton is now very much worn. On thp side nearest Messrs Oldfield’s and Dalton’s gorse has grown, which has divertedl the traffic to the south and lowest side of $9 Fowl Tliis is now much and, an it receives a certain amount of drainage from Mr Brown’s mises, is always more or less wet. T have taken steps to have the gorse removed by occupiers, and the work , will be put in hand at once. Ihq

road really requires shingling, but as the bulk of the grain traffic is now over, and wet weather may be expected at any time, I would suggest that the road be patched in the worst places, the shingle to be carted either by contract or with a hired dray. I weuld also suggest that scrub on the town belt reserve be trimmed, and that approaches be made at "Wilkin . street and Maude street, so that the reserve would he available for light traffic. It will be necessary before more wet weather sets in for the v b*ard to decide upon some method of Braining the north town belt more effectually than at present. Sundry repairs are required in various places, and it wUI be necessary during the month to engage a surface man for a week or fortnight. Several of the special village settlement allotments have recently been' fenced, and the traffic from Denmark street to the south town belt is now diverted mainly into John street, instead of by Owen street as formerly. An old 1 wheel track crossing John street will require to be chipped in, and the road generally can be made passable by the expenditure of about 2 days’ labour. I would also point out that the majority of the settlers bate fenced down to the creek edge, exceeding their boundaries by about 11 links. The contractor for. watertables and crossings has not yet finished bis work, owing to sickness. It will be completed during the current month. Some time ago it was suggested that 1 the cleaning of the creek could be with money* accruing from the lease of garden reserves. As the creek should now be cleaned 1 would

suggest that ike board ascertain if the reserves can be let at once, or what farther steps are likely to be taken in the matter. A sum of £43 6e 2d has now accrued from deferred payment lattd& It will be necessary to decide where this money can bo most advantageously expended. I would respectfully suggest that a portion of it he ; expended on the formation of Gamack street and a portion ef Princes street.—l hare, &0., “Aim. W. Gaze.” It was: resolvsd that the overseer arrange for necessary repairs to north toon bait, and for tha clearing of the watvr-table theraoa. Be drainage, the overaesr suggested that a water-table from the north town belt to the creek by vrsy of Hsyhurst street would meet the ■ case, ead be was authorised to report on costofaamest next meeting. He was aatborised to engage the necessary labor for repairs. He waa instructed to communicate with the Crown Commissioner n the creek reserves. It was decided that estimates be furnished to the Crown Commissioner of the cost ef formation in Gsmack and portion of Princes streets, repairs to North Town JHfelt abutting on village settlement, filling up of holes on certain roads, and the coat of fpot-planks in the village settlement. The clerk was directed to notify that settlers would not be allowed to fence beyond their boundaries to the creek. MIBOELUiriOTJB. Mr Ashwell applied for permission to drain »ectioDs'42l and 422 by taking the water across Owen street to the creek.— After discussion, it was decided that the overseer be directed to communicate with the Temoka Bead Beard in accordance with his previous report on the subject, and ask permission to remove tbs culvert near the sematery to a point opposite Reserve 1701, where it was considered (be necessary drainage could be procured, and, failing this, that the water be taken to the creek by way of Oweo street. Several applications to rant the board’s vacant cottage were held over. ... *ATI. .■ Mr Ash wall gave notice that at the next meeting be would move— 1 “ That a rate of one halfpenny in (he £ be struck on all rateable property in the Town District of Arowhenua." ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £6 18 s 3d were passed for payment. ' , The Board then adjourned. I
