Mundell and Go., Messrs Webster and Macdonald, and Mosinj Gray and Montgomery. The sale takes place to-morrow, Death of a Legislative Ootjnoillos,— Oolonel Brett, M.L.0., died at Wellington on Sunday at 2 o’clock. Though he had been ailing lor some time his death was unexpected, as he was able to take daily exercise. Oondbet and Dancb. —A concert and dance in aid of the funds of the Pleasant Yolley School funds will be held on Friday evening. , A first-rate programme for the concert haa been arranged, and good music and an efficient M.O. provided for the dance. The Johnston,Disaster,-— The Premier received the following cable from Mr J. G. Blaine, Secretary of State, Washington, in answer to Now Zealand’s telegram of sympathy s—“ Accept grateful acknowledgment of people for deep sympathy of New Zi&laud in recent Johnstown disaster.” Advertising —The Honorable Mr Gosohen, Cnahoellor of the Exchequer, in roakirg hi# financial statement in the Mouse of Commons recently, said the revenue from cocoa bad greatly increased, while the revenue from coffee had decreased. Experts told him the cause was “that cocoa has actually been puffed into its more satisfactory position by the energy of ambitious advertisers, whiP coffee has been neglected in this respect.” There ia evidence of the value of advertising. A statement of working expanses was submitted, and the stock in hand gave a gross output estimated roughly for the current yr-ur of 50 tons. After considerable diecuation, Mr Gray moved—" That Mr Bowman’s offer be accepted, and that he be reappointed for 12 months from Ist October, subject to the same conditions as last year.” Mr Austin seconded the motion and it was carried. The secretary was instructed to inform Mr Sowers of the decision arrived at. Temuka Caledonian Society. A meeting of the Temuka Oiled'mian Society was held at the Wallingford Hole! yesterday evening.- Dr' J. S. Hayes, vice--president, occupied the chair, and there were present—Messrs Mm my, Lawson, McLeod, Henry,.Bisaett, Quinn, McKay, Naughton, and Mogridge, A letter was received from the president, Mr A, M. Clark, apologising for non-attendance. It was decided (o hold an ingieside on July 16th. Mr Mogridge proposed that in pi ice of aa ingieside a ball should be held. This was seconded by Mi Naughton, but on being put to the vote was lost. It was reso ved that the charge to !he ingieside should bo 2s. Messrs Hayes, Henry, Lawson, McKay, and Biaset kindly volunteered to find refreshments, and the same gentlemen, with the addition of Messrs Murray,

( Mogridge, and McLeod were appointed a I committee to arrange details. It was agre d tjiat the doorkeepers be supplied with a.list of namps of members, and that they be instructed not to admit any stranger without a guarautee from the directors. Minor details were discussed, and the meeting terminated. ' Temuka Literary Society. —The first ' meeting of the Temuka Literary Society was held last evening in the Oddfellows’Hall, Rey. J; Dickson, the president, in the chair. Thera was a good!) attendance, about 50 being present. Mr Dickson briefly explained the objects of. the society, uad what had 1 already been done. ’ He intimated that there would be papers' read by membersfand debates taken part in, etc. He would take-tip a lot of tune with his lecture, and would not detain i-hem any longer with his remarks, but would at once proceed. The sublet of the evening was ” Dl.mpsas of Other Worlds,” illustrated by a lot of diagrams,' prepared by Mr Montgomery. The lecture was listened to ; with groat attention. After the conclusion the pr t si lent invited criticism. Mr K. F. Gray proposed a hearty vote of thanks to ■ Mr Dickson, and said it had been a : great treat, and would have been enjoyed more only for the coldness of the evening. Mr Proas then spoke on the subject .of astroporny at some length, and seconded Mr Gray’s njotion, which was carried by acclamation. Mr Montgomery said he had for a long time taken an interest in astronomy, 1 jnd humoioiitly referred to thp notions children had about the moon being made of green cheese. He found, bow -yer, that that wan incorrect, and that it was said the csld there registered 500 degrees of frost. Geraldine Racing Club,—Tbs annual meeting o£ this Club will be bold fihio evening in the Gercldino Hotel, Eangitata Island Band of Hope,— The monthly meeting of the Bangitata Island Band of Hope was held in the schoolroom on Wednesday evening, J uno 12tb, 1889, and was well attended, most of the members being present. The following; kindly took p*rt, viz.: Messrs F. Watts, H. Grainger, J.Book, J. Morrison, H. Wright, R. Fonseca, D. Watts, J. Morrison, J. Buck ; Miss Grainger gave a solo, At the olose three new members were enrolled. The meeting was very orderly and pleasant throughout, and at the close the names wore taken of those who wore willing to take partin the next meeting, with the satisfactory result often volunteers. Mr F, Wright occupied the obair, and Mr 3. B, Grainger officiated as organist. The meeting closed in the usual manner.
