RAUKAPUKA LICENSING COMMITTEE.

An adjourned meeting of this committee was h? ld on Saturday last for the purpose i of considering the renewal of the license \ of the Hilton Hotel. Present—Messrs ; J. M. Barker (chairman), A. Macdonald, Moore, and W. E. Barker. "* /fftt F. Wilson Smith appeared on behalf of the' applicant, Mrs J. Tindall. Ho understood that objection had been taken to the house that it was not wanted. He presented a petition signed by all the principal residentsin thedistrict asking that the house might b# kept open, as it was a great convenience to the travelling public, being the only hotel between Temuka and Fairlie Creek, and was much needed for stock drivers and travellers for accommodation. Mr Smith contended that the granting ot the license was essential to the house being kept open. As an accommodation house only it could not, ho kept open, as one trade had to work in with the other. Not only so, but the closing of the house would be a real loss to Mrs Tindall. Th® committee said that of course they could not study the question of loss to the applicant. Mr W. E. Barker asked if the applicant had a list of the persons who had used the house ef late for accommodation. The applicant said no, but that there were generally two or three every sight. Mr E. Barker said he did not think the bench should renew the license. Ever since he had been upon the bench he had always heard the same thing, that the hotel was not needed. So far as he could see it was used very little indeed for accommodation. The question for the bench to consider was whether the house was wanted for accommodation or not. As far as be could seo it was not, but was a used for the selling of liquor, and he d certainly oppose the granting of cense. Major Moore said the question was whether the house was necessary. _ He was of opinion after hearing the petition read that the house was needed. If the license was refused the house would be shut up, and as be knew as much about tbe ; district as most people he considered the bouse was required. He moved—- “ That the license ba renewed, subject to the resolution passed at the last meeting With regard to the necessary repairs being undertaken.” Mr Macdonald thought Mr Moore should know mere about that district than anybody else, as he lived that way, and he would second the proposition. The resolution was then carried, and renewal granted accordingly. The meeting then terminated.
