SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
TEMTJKA , The monthly meeting of the Te- , muka School Committee was held on j Tuesday evening last. Present— , Messrs K. F. Gray, J. Blyth, A. R. i Allan, W. G-. Kutland, and W. Storey. , In the absence of the chairman, Mr ( J. T; M. Hayhurst, Mr Gray was v»ted , to the chair. , MIKTJTES. I j The minutes of the last meeting j ( were read and confirmed. ■ COBEESJOITDEirCE. Correspondence was read From the Board of Education, forwarding summary of attendance returns for the quarter ending March Ist. It showed that at the beginning of the quarter the number on the roll was 819, and at the end of same 364. During the quarter 54 children—26 females and 28 miles—were admitted to the; school. From the same, stating that the sanction of the Board must he obtained before schoolrooms can he used for aay other purpose than ordinary school work or. religious purposes. From the. same, Btating that £ll 7s 6d had been paid to the credit of the committee at the Bank of New Zealand for the quarter ending June 30. From the same, stating that the committee's recommendation of Miss Phillips as successor to Miss Ladbrooke had been ratified by the Board. From Mr E. Brown, forwarding a j quotation for Newcastle coal. j HEAD MASTEE'S EEPOET. The Head Master's report for the month was read as. follows: — " I have the honor to submit the following report for the month of April—Average roll: Boys, 1946; girls, 169.6 ; total, 364.3. Average attendance : Boys, 142.4 ; girls, 137; total, 279.4 Highest attendance: Boys, 163; girls, 146 ; total, 309. We require 1 dozen boxes slate pencils, 1 gross drawing pencils, 6 boxes chalk, and some foolscap envelopes. I enclose cheque for £1 4s, being amount of stationery fees received up to date. W. Betaes. ■ The head master also enclosed a list of irregular attendants.—The secretary was instructed to take the necessary steps to have the usual notices served -v on the parents. The secretary was instructed to obtain the. requisites asked for. Considerable discussion took place
on this point, and finally it was unanimously resolved—" That greater care should be exercised in the use of slate and lead pencils, and that the teachers of each class should be entrusted with the distribution and collection of the same." Ihe small amount received from parents for stationery and fuel fees, was also discussed. It was pointed out that the parents of many children attending did not send any contributions to this fund, their children at the same time receiving the benefit of free pencils and stationery. It was resolved -—" That the head master be requested to furnish a list of these persons who have not subscribed to the incidental fund. TISITOE. ! Mr Storey was appointed visitor for I the month. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount or £6 5s 8d were passed for payment and the meeting terminated. SOUTH ORARI. The monthly meeting of the above committee was held on Monday last. Present —Messrs J. C. Binskin (chairman), J. Collie, G-. Batty, J. J. Ellis, J. McLeod, W. Langdon, and Gr. O'Neil.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The teacher handed in the subscription lists for the purchase of firewood, the sum of £2 19s 6d having been collected. A further sum of 6s 6d being required, it was decided to send a collector to those parents of children who have not given anything toward the fund; «:■'.- The teacher's report was then read, showing the average attendance for the quarter so far to be 60; also enclosing list of children who have been attending very irregularly this quarter. He also reported the pump out of order, and that the scrim in one of the outhouses required refiling.—lt was resolved to wait till the end of the month before taking action in the matter re irregular attendance, and that the visitor get the other things attended to. A letter was received from the Board of Education, covering circular re letting school for other than scholastic or religious purposes, and summary of attendance returns. Tenders was then opened for charwoman, the following being the applicants:—- Mrs Bates, £7 per annum • Mrs Campbell, £7 10s; and Mrs J. Johnson, £9 10a. It was decided to accept the tender of Mrs Bates, duties to commence on Ist of June, The visitor reported that everything was working satisfactorily. Mr J. J. Ellis was appointed visitor for the month. The question of re-opening the library was fully discossed, and it was resolved that each member of the committee take month about as librarian, the library to be opened from 7 to 8 p.m. every Saturday evening; the charge for membership to be 3s per half year, paid in advance. The meeting then adjourned.
