OUR VOLUNTEERS.
The following circular has been issued by the Defence Department, dated Wellington, 17lh May, 1889 : Id order tojencourage individual target practice in the Tolunteer Force, the Hod. the Defence Minister has approved of the following medals, which will be distiibnted, od the conditions hereafter detailed being conformed to : 1. A gold medal for the best shot in each island. 2. A gold and silver medal for the second best shot in each island. S. A silver medal for the beat shot in each district, excluding the holders of the medals detailed in paragraphs 1 and 2. 4. The medal in each case to become the property of the highest scorer, if won three times in succession, or five times at intervals. 5. Marksmen, who must be efficient Volunteers, are alone eligible to compete j for these medals. 6. The distances to be fired will be 200 yards -standing, 300 yards kneeling, 500 j yards in any position : ten rounds at each distance. 7. The competition in each district to take place between the Ist of January, and 3lßt of March, on auch day as may be appointed, and to be under the personal superintendence of an officer of ths Permanent or District Staff. i 8. The original scores to be signed by officers superintending the finag, and to be forwarded by first mail to the Dtfenca"t)ffice, through the Officer Commanding the District. 9. Targets to be ssime as laid down in pamphlet on musketry instruction. 10. Officers are not eligible to compete for these medals. 13. Ammunition for the competition will be refunded to corps. 12. Ties will be decided as provided for by Musketry Instruction, 1887.
