THE GERMAN STRIKES.

Berlin, May 15. The strike in Westphalia is spreading to Wassenberg and Aix-la-Chapelle in the Rhine provinces. May 16. Prince Bismarck is said to be much concerned at the spread of strikes in Westphalia, which evidently are caused by a wide and effective organisation. As the outcome of the strikes, large quantities of coal, coke, and iron were purchased in England for use in Germany. May 17. The Emperor William has advised a deputation from the colliery proprietors who waited upon him to keep close touch of the workmen and nse every effort to provide for their welfare. It is probable that a compromise will be arranged on the basis ef eight hours labor, with increased wages. The proprietor of one of the collieries, in Westphalia, refuses to consider the terms offered by the strikers, and it is believed that this refusal will endanger the terms of the compromise which was offered on the eight hours system with on increase ot wages. May 18. Oae-third of the Westphalia strikers have arranged matters with the colliery proprietors and returned to work. The strikers in Silesia, a province in the south-east of Prussia, still hold out, and show a menacing attitude towards the troops, and have wrecked several of the colliery buildings, A conflict took place between the military and the miners, during which one of the latter was shot. London, May 19. The miners of Northumberland have gone out on strike, and have sent messages to Berlin sympathising with the Westphalia strikers.
