GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

TO THE EDITOIi Sib,— Will you kindly insert this letter, refering to a grievance of mine, in your valuable paper. I sent a letter to the Geraldine Road Board, requesting them to remove the gates and open the road leading from my house, and the answer I received was that the Board does not see the necessity of complying with my request, as the road is very little used by the public, and the gates are properly hung and kept in good order. JS T ow, Mr Editor, I have 153 acres, and lam compelled to go this way with my grain, but Mr Slack wanted to close this road, and it would have given me one mile longer road to traverse. Mr Slack did net tell the Board that he has a block of land on each side of the road mentioned: one contains 141 a 2r, the other 137 a 2r, and the produce all goes down this road. That makes 482 a depending on this road. But let any person look at the plan of the Woodside Estate, and they will see the road between block 9 and 10, a distance of about 85 chains, with a gate at each end, and unfenced, and they can see where the difficulty is. I had to fence all my land, while he is protected by having the gates, and the ranger that is put

on by the Board will impound my stock if they get out, whereas he is protected and gets the benefit of the grass. It would be a benefit to the country if there was an Act passed to compel all the gates on roads to be removed. It would give work to the unemployed fencing. Now, Mr Editor, I attended the annual meeting of ratepayers at Geraldine, expecting to ask Mr Slack if he would like to close the main road leading from his house for the benefit of hia country, and go the long roundabout way that he wanted me to go. It would amount to the very same thing. And what does the Board call the ratepayers together for at the annual meeting but for discussion ? But they advised me to apply to the new Board. By inserting this you will oblige.—l am, etc,, R. P. Wells. Greendale Farm, Gapes’ Valley, May 6,1889.
