ROAD BOARD ELECTION.

TO TEH EDITOR. Sib,—As I wa« not allowed to speak on behalf of Mr McShane at the declaration of the pall of the Geraldine Road Board election, you would oblige by giving me space to publish what I intended to say. Mr McShane was absent in Otago, and asked me to speak on hi# behalf. In the first place I wanted to return thanks on behalf of Mr McShane, and next to deal wtih the accusation made against him to the effect that he was the cause of cutting down the men’s wages. It is not true that he was the cause of it, What happened was this: The board called for tenders for damages done by a flood, and not one tender was received. It was then proposed by one of the members to reduce the men’s wages from 7s to 5s per day, but to this Mr McShane objected, Mr McShane said if they wanted to make any reduction to reduce the pay of the men who were engaged from year to year, but not men coming on for two or three days to work, especially when they would have to work in water. When I attempted to make this explanation at the declaration of the poll Mr Kelland came up, like a gentleman, and sang out that I was right, but not one of the other two members present had the courage to come up and say the same.—l am, etc., A. Reiman.
