S.C, BOARD OF EDUCATION.

A meeting of the S.<J. Education Board was held on Thursday. Present—Messrs S. W. Goldsmith (chairman), Talbot, Penrpoint, Gray, Howell, and Barker, and Revs. G. JBnrchiY and T. Jasper-Smyth. The chairman «tatod that Mr Kalaugher (Temuku) and Mr Bourne (Sutherlands) toad resigned. The committees had recommended Mies Philips as infant mistress at Ternuka and Mr Schmedes as master at Orari School.—Theso recommendations were approved. A voucher for £2BB la, being 3d per head on the attendance, was received from the Department as a further contribution for buildings.—Mr Rut-lay reminded the Board that this money was earmarked for Gerddine. B-eportß on inspections of a number of schools were received from the inspector, and they were ordored to be sect to the committees concerned. Reports received from the school districts showed that aU elected except ssven. Six had not proceeded to elect because there were not seven persons present. In ore case—Belfield—a committee hud been elected, but on Monday, the w rong day. Mr BatcUy remarked !h«t it was a pity people gave themselves and the board so much trouble and expanse when three or four people could elect a committee. It was resolved that a fresh date be fixed for elections in those cages where former meetings had failed—May 23rd. Ho thought the board should draw the line at rinking, as the furniture must suffer from being pulled aside. —Alter Borne discussion it waß resolved : "That, it having come to the knowledge of the board that somß committees allow their schoolrooms to be used for purposes which are considered objectionable, on the ground of damage being probably occasioned to the school furniture, a circuW be wnt to all committees informing them that ihe sanction of the board must be first obtained before letting the rooms for any other purpose than ordinary school work or religious purposes." Letters were read from the Otaio, Fairlie Creek, and Winchester committees requesting retention of teachers to whom notice had been given on account of their ( being, nncer'ificated. —It was decided to retain the teachers for the current year, subject to their undertaking to Bubmtt themselves for examination at next opportunity. South Orari asked for un assistant mistress in place of the present sawing mistress and pupil teacher.— Approved. Balfield asked for a pupil teacher, t»nd Miss Leary, to be removed from Orari South, was appoioted. The Ilangitata (aided school) chairman wrote that some members of the committee had not paid the contributions they had promised towards the teacher's salary. —The secretary stated that the committee is in debt lo the board about £7.—lt was decided to reply that unless the arrows are paid within a month steps wdl be taken to close the school. Opihi offered to pay half cost of painting the buildings if the board would do the work.—Offer accepted. Pleesaut Point asked the board to wipe off the long-standing debt of the committee —now £lll33.—Declined. Kakahu Bush asked for n class-room to be added, and offered £5 towards the cost, which they estimated at £l2 or £ls for a room of 18ft x 12Ef.—Not entertained.

KaDgitalu Shliou acked for a grant for planting. The committee had fenced the Bite gratuitously, and rent whs being received from a spare section.—£3 granted to be speot on trees, the committee to plant them. Totara Valley School was reported to be in a very shaky condition, and liable to be blown away. The roof jvus said to have " waved " up and down eight inches. —Architect to inspect, and have repairs made if cost does not exceed a few pounds; if coat above that amount, to report. Resolved—-" Thatlho board desires to represent to the Education Department that in its opinion an uniform system for its examination for the board scholarships should prevail, and that examination papers should be prepared i>y the Department and the examination carried out throughout the colony on the same date."
