A Rise of SaiiAUT Wanted.—The Emperor of Germany receives a salary of £120,000 and wants it inereased to a quarter of a million. For a man who has not been in the business much mora than six months, the young Emperor has remarkable confidence in his own ability and a good estimate of his own personal worth.
New Kind or Glass.—A aew kind of glass has been invented in Sweden. It contains no fewer than fourteen substances, whereas the cammon kind of glass contains only six. Phosphorus and borax are included, nnd they are not to be found in any other glasß. The result i», according to thoss who believa in the new invention, something marvellous.
Nabbow Escape.—A young lady named Miss Hill, of Bangiora, had a nanow escape of being killed at the Riccarton station on Monday. She was getting out of the trnin while it was in motion, and fell between the tram and the platform. The guard rushed forward anri rescued her from hsr perilous position, and she escaped with a great fright nnd a few bruises. Removal. Mr Robert Oonnall, who has for some four years filled the office of ticket clerk and telegraphist at Temuka railway station, has been transferred to Ti-naru, where he will occupy a position in the booking department. Mr Oonnell's uniform civility, punctuality, and general attention to his duties have beoii much appreciate'!, and his friends will be glad to hear of his promotion. The Bratbht os the Saitoaxs.— The Mayor of Auckland, Mr Devore, has given notice that he will at the noxt meeting of the Auckland City Council table a .'notion of thanks to (lie Samoan natives for their gallantry in saving life during the scenes of the terrible dissster of March laßt. Ho has telegraphed to tho municipal authorities of Southern boroughs, asking their co-operation in this matter.

Al/iiEOED Inoendiahism:.—What appears to have been a deliberate attempt to burn down the workshops of the WellingtonManawatu Railway Company was frustrated on Sunday morning. The night watchman noticed a glare in the building, aud broke open the door. Ho found that a wellsaturated kerosene case, packed with ihavingi and chips of wood had been placed against tha wall of the building, and when it was discovered, the wall of the shop was just beginning to ignite. As it was it was muck charred, and the handles of a number of tools wfaioh were stunding against it were burnt. Had th« fire obtained a greater hold nothing short of a miracle could have saved the building. A Missing Saiioe. —The second mate of the ship Kinolune, Mr Robinßon, was found to bo missing on Sunday morning when tha vessel was ready to put to sea from Timaru. Enquiries were set on foot, and the captain and members of the crew, with the police, made a thorough search of the town, the hotels and private houses he was known to hare been in the habit of calling being in turn visited in vain. All that could be gathered was that at 4 o'clock a.m. he had been left by a sailor of one of the other vessels in port near one of the hotels, and it was then feared thai he had been drowned while attempting to get aboard his vessel. The harbor has been daily dragged since, but without result. WIJiCHESTEK SOHOOIi OO)MMITTBK.—The first ordinary meeting of the aewly-rlected Winchester School Committee toak plaoe on Monday evening. Present —Messrs W. Deßenzy (chairman), A. W. Eusor, C. Bishop, J. Woodley, and I. Connolly. After routine business, correspondence from the Board of Education was considered. Tha board ware prepared to grant £3 towards repairs to the sohoolhouse, and the teacher of sred to pay the balance of amount if required. It was resolved to have the work done. After due consideration it was decided that the parents and guardians of children who were attending school irregularly should be summoned at the expiration of a week, unless such ohildren wore sont to school within that dato, or sufficient cause shown for their absence. The difficulty of meeting the ordinary expenses of the school now that the incidantal fund has been curtailed was discussed at length. It was deoided to send a circular letter to all the parents and guardians, asking I hem to contribute the sun? of sixpence per head each quarter, to augment the incident.l fund. Membors generally expressed the opinion that such a modest request, would bo complied with. It was resolved to inviln tenders for cleaning and scaveugering. The meeting then terminated.
I Bank of Nbtt Zealand.- The half-yearly meeting of the shareholders m the Bank of New Z -aland was held at Auckland on Tuesday. The report of the directors was as follows :—The results of the bulf-year's operations wera—net profit for half year ended March 30th, 1889, after appropriation for bad and doubtful debts, £43,360 Is lid, Lo which has to be added the premium on new shares aliotttd above par, less charges and costs, £11,1211 balance from half year ended 29th September, 1888, £33,968 10* 8d ; making a total of £88,449 12i 7d, which it is proposed to appropriate as follows: to payment of a dividend at the rate of 7 per cent, per annum, £33,063 ; balance earned forward £55,386 12s 7d. The chairman, in moving the adoption of the report, said the amount of net profit earned during the half year showed an increase of £IO,OOO on the previous year. The better results were due, to some extent, to the new capital employed, but it only became available as the half year advanced, and effects would be more marked next term. The signs of roturning prosperity, referred to last half year, were more pronouncod. The ooo:l harvest, the revival of the flix industry, the remunerative prices for prod nee, and the increase in land settlement, point to k ateady growth of prosperity m which the bank wilj participate, '

Thb Small Birds Nuisance. The Selwyn County Council estimates that last season small birds destroyed grain to the vnlue of £15,000. It is proposed to levy a rule for raising funds to check tbo pest, 100,000 acres were in grain this season in the county. BITRGH.ABY, —Burglars ent»red the Feilding post ofSce on Tuesday morning, and carried away the s»fe in a hand-cart, which was stolen from Light's Denbigh Hotel. The safe was burst open with a sledge hammer, crewbar, and cold chisel. After securing the cash, the stamps, etc., wore burnt. The total estimated loss is £2lO, of which £26 was money. The railway station was aho entered by picking the looks in the porter's room. The police were away at the Supreme Court, Wanganui. Temperance Lecttoe. To-morrow evening, Miss AckermaD, the noted Temperance lectures, will addiefs a mooting in (he Tomuka Volunteer Hall, aod no doubt there will be a large attendance to hear her. Miss Ackerman comes from America, and has already delivered lectures in many parts of this colony, and has invariably baen Tvell received. To-morrow evening thu Rev. T. A. Hamilton will take the chair at 7.30. A number of hymus from Ssnkey's collection will be sung by a united choir, nnder tho condtictorship of Mr W. G» liutland, with Mr Proudlock as organist. "Nae Wilet, Nae Wiley Ata."—A contributor to the Evening Mail relates that recently a cute old Scotchman, whose run was infested with wild pigs, ran a couple of hundred of them into a small paddock and advertised them for sale. A few days afterwards camo along three mounted Chinese dealars. After much bargaining at last a sale was made, and the buyers prepared to take away their purchase. Sows misgiving apparently seized on the chief of the three, for as he was mounting his horse he looked suspiciously at the arunters incessautly marching around the enclosure, and itiquired, "Piggee wery wiley?" "Mae wiloy," answered old Mac ; " nae wiley ava." But half satisfied, the dealer signed to let them out, and no sooner did the last animal emerge than the whole lot set off at full speed towards each point of the compass, followed by a trio of galloping anathema* tiain? Chinamen, Late that night three weary, sore, and pigles* celestials returned to the homestead and demanded their money back. "Piggee too wiley; no can catchee." But oil Mac was not to be had that way. "Eh," said he with a smile of pity, " ye're but a feckless lot. The pegs was douce enough gif ye had but spoke saftly to 'era.
