Information has been received here to the effect that Henry George, the well known author of “ Progress and Poverty,” will visit Australia in October.
Mr Vogan, a gentleman well known in Auckland, has been appointed to lead an expedition under the auspices of the Royal Geographical Society of Australasia to explore the region lying between the Upper Mulligan and Diamantina rivers.
Melbourne, April 27
As a sequel to the fire at the Bijou Theatre on Monday evening the authorities have decided to prosecute the lessees of the Opera House and Theatre Royal for having no effective fire appliances on the premises, April 28. Arrived—Taupo, from New Zealand ; Manapouri, from the Bluff,
The Manerkah Hotel and store were destroyed by fire, and several persons had narrow escapes of being burnt to death. The damage is estimated at £14,000, which is covered by insurance only to the amount of £6OOO.
