ELECTION OF SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
WAITOHI FLAT.
The annual meeting of householders, for the purpose of electing a committee for the school district for the ensuing year, was held in the schoolroom on Tuesday evening. There was a fair attendance, and on the motion of Mr Scott, seconded by Mr Cunningham, Mr J. Fraser presided. The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed, and the following annual report of the retiring committee was submitted “ Gentlemen,— The retiring committee beg to report that during their term of office they held eleven meetings, with an average attendance of about six. W o took office with a credit balance of £2O Is 6d, and the income from all sources during the year has been £l7 18s, and the expenditure £ls Bs Bd, leaving a credit balance of £22 33s lOd to be handed over to our successors. The school was examined by Mr Gow, the District Inspector, on October 22nd, and the report was highly satisfactory. During the month of May the Board of Education gave effect to the Committee’s recommendation, and appointed Miss Ada Stocker to the vacant pupil-teacherahip, and the committee has every reason to be satisfied with her services. A concert in aid of the prize fund was hold in the schoolroom on November 20lh, and resulted in netting £7 14s 9d, which, with a balance of £2 14s lOd on hand from the previous year, enabled the committee to give the children and their friends a grand treat, a number of valuable book prizes, and a number of useful and ornamental articles as prizes for along programme of sports. Still a credit balance of 18s 9d is on hand.—The number of children on the roll at the commencement of the year was 63, uow it is 71. The average attendance during the year was 49.2, and the average weekly roll 68. The books have been duly audited and found correct. The retiring members are Messrs Fraser, Thornier, Seaton, Andrews, Cunningham, Moore, and Halley, all of whom are eligible for re-election. —J. Fkasek, Chairman of Committee.” The Chairman further stated that everything in connection with the school had been working smoothly and satisfactorily during the year. The average attendance for the December quarter was 58, and if an average of 55 had been maintained during the March quarter the school would have been entitled to a certificated assistant mistress in place of the pupil teacher. But owing to harvest operations the attendance had receded last quarter. Mr Scott wished to know how many holidays were granted during the year, and the Chairman stated that he was not acquainted with any regulations affecting the holidays, but thought that six weeks was the minimum.
The meeting then proceeded to the j election of the new committee, when the following gentlemen wore duly nominated; -Messrs M. Moore, S. Galbraith, McKinnon, M. Smith, D. Cunningham, Thos. Thornley, A. J. Andrews, J. Fraser, (j. Scott, T. Currie, and B. Bcdpath. On the ballot being taken the Chairman declared Messrs Fraser, Scott, Andrews, Thornley, Cunningham, McKinnon, and Galbraith duly elected. This being ell the business the public meeting terminated with the usual vote to the chair. Committee Meeting, At a meeting of the new committee held immediately after the public meeting, Mr J. Fraser was unanimously re-elected chairman of the committee. It was also
decided that the committee meet on the Inst, instead of the first, Monday in each month as hitherto. This being all the business ths meeting iidjonmoi. soum ORARI. The annual meeting of homoholders was held on Tuesday evening. There was a very good attendance, and Mr iT. 0. Binekin, chairman of the retiring committee, was voted to the chair. The minutes of the list annual meeting were and confirmed, and the report of the outgoing ommitteo was read as follows " Gentlemen,— Tone committee have held twelve ordinary and three special meetings during the year, at which the members have attended as follows: J. C. Bimkia 15, J. Behrena 13, T. Bates 13, 6 Batty 12, J. Collie 14, R. Coles . 12, J. McLeod 11. At the commencement of the year Mr John McLeod wan in charge of the sohool as locum tenens, and Mias M. Lsary pupil teacher. On May 28th Mr J. A. Fitzgerald, who had been appointed, took charge, and the sohool has made excellent progress during the year. At the commencement the number of children on the roll was: Boys 35, girls 28, total 63, and the average attendance was 26. The roll number at present is • B >ys 40, girls 38, total 78, an increase of 16, and the average attendance for last quarter was 58, which average entitles us to an assistant mistress. Application has been mads to the Board for one, bub for some reason or other they have deferred the appointment. Another letter has been sent, and it is hoped that it will come before the Board at their May mooting, kfour committee have much pleasure in stating that owing to the attendance being to large it was found that the school would not accommodate all the children. Application was made for additional class • rooms, which the Board granted, and wo have now school accommodation for from 76 to 80 children. It was intended to put a small door in the end of the old building to give access to the new room, but the Committee thought it would be much more convenient to have the end removed and a moveable partition put in, and applied to the board to have this done, the committee guaranteeing half the cost. The board sanctioned the work. A ball wm got up to raise the committee’s half, but was very poorly attended, only 7s 6i befog over after paying expenses. The committee then allocated the balance of the prizi and treat fund £2 la 4i, toward the partition, and paid’the balance of £2 3s 2d themselves, The school was examined on November 23, 1888 and gave every satisfaction to the inspector, and also to the committee, the percentage of passes being 95, and failures 6. The committee’s accounts and books have been audited by the board’s secretary, and returned marked “ Correct.” At the last meeting of your committee it was resolved that the chairman bring before the householders the necessity of subscribing to the fund for the purchase of firing for the winter, as the incidental granti# not sufficient to meet all expenses. "The following is the balance-sheet:— Baoeip’.s: Balance in bank, £1 12s 3d ; incidental grant, £l7 17s 6d j grant for new pump, £2 10s } rent, etc., £2 15s; total, £24 14s 9d. 'ihe expenditure £2l 6s 10d, leaving a balance of £3 7s lid, including the present quarter’s iacidentol grant. The prize and treat fund—Receipts: Balance from last year, £1; June concert and dance, £8 17s 4i; December concert and dance, £2 14s; collected at treat and dance, fl 13s; total, £l4 4s 41. The expenditure was £l2 Si, the balance, £2 Is 41, being allocated as shown in the report. The librory fund— Receipt*, £2 8s; expenditure, Is: leaving a balance of £2 7a, “J. 0. The question of funds for fuel was then discussed. It was proposed by Mr O’Neil, seconded by Mr Ellis, and carried: “ That the new committee send round a subscription list to the householders, and each one be asked to contribute what ho can afford.” The chairman then asked if any house* holder had any question to ask o£ the old committee with regard to their administration. No questions being asked, the election of a new committee was proceeded with. Messrs J. A. Fitzgerald and B. Bennett wore elected scrutineers. The result was as followsGK O'Neil, 34 ; J. Collie, 28; J. J. Ellis, 19; W. Lingdon, 20; J. 0. Binskin, 17 ; GK Batty, 15; J. McLeod, 11; R. Coles, 10 ;T. Bates, 7; M. Buckley, 6; J. Harrison, 1. The chairman then declared the first 7 duly elected. At the new committee meeting held afterwards all the members were present. It was proposed by Mr J. Collie, and seconded by Mr GK Batty, aud carried unanimously—•'That Mr J. C. Binskin take the chair." Mr Binskin thanked them for the honor, but would rather that some other member take it, as no doubt it was a honor to be chairman. There was also plenty of work attached to the chairmanship when there was no secretary, but ha would do hia best to fill both positions. It was resolved—(l) That the scavenger be reappointed; (2) that the meetings be held every third Monday no hitherto; (3) that the chairman and Mr J. McLeod sign cheques; (4) that five or six subscription lilts be given to the elder children tc collect funds for firing; (5) that three cords of black pine firewood be obtained at 22s per cord delivered ; (6) that lenders bo called for the position of charwoman for the year, applicants to state what sum required per year. Mr Fitzgerald asked the committee to remind the board re the appointment of assisttant mistress. Mr Langdon was appointed visitor, ond the meeting adjourned till the third Monday in May.
HILTON. The annual meeting of householders was held in the sohoolroom on Tuesday, 23rd April. There attendance was good. Mr Skinner, the chairman of the outgoing committee, reud the report and balance sheet which were adopted. On the motion of Mr Kelland a vote of thanks was passed to the retiring committee for the way they had carried out their duties for the paßfc year. The election of a new committee was then proceeded with. Mr J. Kelland was voted to the chair, and Mr G. Stevens appointed scrutineer. Eleven nominations were received for membership, and the following gentlemen were eleoted *~J. Kellund, W. Beattie. A Toomey, 0. G-. Bradley, J. Leary, W. Hide, and R. Skinner. _ At a meeting of the new committee, held after the general meeting. Mr R. Skinner 1 was eleoted chairman. It was decided to hold the meetings as usual on the last Friday of the month, and that tho chairman and Mr Beattie sign cheques for the committee. Tenders were opened for the cleaning of the school, and Mrs Constable's tender of £lO was accepted. It was decided to hold a concert in aid of the school funds about the 17th May. Tho meeting then terminated.
