FOOTBALL.
EAST CHRISTCHURCH V, WAIHI. A match was played on the North Park on Saturday afternoon, immediately following the Wellington v. Christchurch match', between the East Christchnrch and Waihi (South Canterbury) Football Clubs, The home team was captained by Mr F, H. Hymen, and the visiting te&m was composed os follows ; Fell-back, Oxley ; three-quarter backs, J. P. Kalaugher, A. Shallard, and W. Stewart; half-backs, T. Hart (captain) and C. Mclntosh ; forwards, J. McLeod, D. Lewis, W. Lewis, F. Shol ard, A. Stewart, D. Stewart, H. N. Hisksns, W. Brinkman, and E. Wagstaff. Messrs L. Cohen and J. P. Firth umpired, and the Rev. J. Hoalaon was referee. East Christchurch kicked off, and the return was well slopped by Ebert, Some scrums took place in the Waihi a twentyfives, and from a free kick the visitors were forced down, A rush of the Waibi s forwards, beaded by one of the Stewarts, relieved tbe side, and play was taken to the centre of the field. W. Hobbs had an ineffectual pot at goal, and soon after some bad kicking on the part of Waihi enabled McKee to roll over the line with the ball. Bendron took tbe kick, but failed to negotiate a goal. Some loose scrummaging followed, of which East Christchurch had the boat, Ebert and Dow being conspicuous, A good run and clean kick by A. Shallard transferred the play to the home team’s twenty-fives. Atkinson got on a rush, and looked dangerous, hut he was well collared by Mclntosh. Waihi was agdn on the defensive. East Christchurch had a good opportunity to score, but the passing was too erratic. Waihi relieved the pressure by a free kick along the touch line. East Christchurch were now having the best of the game, and Waihi were again forced down. From a loose scrum on the Waihi goal line Atkinson got across. Hendron took the kick, but was again unsuccessful. East Christchurch continually pressed Waihi, but the visitors were enabled to clear their line by the free ticks they obtained. At half time the play was in the Waihi quarters. After commencing the second spell some loose play followed, and the ball was worked down to the Waihi twenty-fives. Kalaugher then got hold of tbe leather, und made a grand run through the field, scoring the first try for the visitors, A. Shallard took the kick, and placed an easy goal. Waihi was shortly afterwards forced down. Forbes and the two Hobbs were conspicuous in a rush, und W. Hobbs’s made an ineffectual pot at goal. Hyman got over,- but was culled back for off-side play. Waihi made a good rally, and Hobbs had another shot at goal, the ball going between tbo posts. Waihi was again foiced down, and play still continued in their quarters, obtaining relief several times by free kicks. A good rush by Waihi, in which W. Stewart was conspicuous; carried the ball into the centre of the field, but the advantage gained was lost by a free kick allowed to East Christchurch. A mark was obtained by East Christchurch in their opponents’ twentyfives, but the kick was spoiled by Waihi. Scrum after scrum took place close to tbe Waibi goal-lino, and W. Hobbs made several attempts to get over, but the collaring of Kalaugher was too good for him. He succeeded however at length, and obtained a well deserved try, Bendron increasing the score on the call of time by a neat goal. Eaet Christchurch thus won by a goal and two tries (five points) to a goal (three points). The play on either side was not up to tbe mark, and the number of free kicks allowed Waihi, no leas than twentytwo, showed that East Christchurch have a lot to learn with regard to the new rules. Tbe passing on either side was poor, but the want of practice will account in a great measure for this. Of the home team Hyman, Ebert, Dow, Atkinson, and W. Hobbs were conspicuous in the loose pley, and Kesteven and McKee in the scrum. Tbe Waihi men played a plucky game, and with good coaching would make a formidable team They played beat if anything towards the latter end of the «rame, and East Christchurch was then put fairly on their metal, when trying to equalise or better the score. Full advantage could not be taken of their smart three-quarter-back, Kalaugher, as be was suffering from injury as well as severe indisposition, but ho showed a dash of his form in tbo run he made when obtaining the try, and towards the end of the game. Oxley did good service as full-back, playing riskily, however, at times. The two 1 half-backs pl»ycd very fair games, and the forwards worked well, but there was a ( want of combination in the team, due in a great measure to the members living in a largo and scattered district, and want of opportunities to play con-
etanlly toother. In the evening the E»st Christchurch entertained the Waihi men at n dinner at the Clarendon Hotel. —Press.
The Lyttelton Times states the forwards played very well, and mentions Hiskens Shallard, Stewart, and Lewis as being conspicuous among them.
