ASHBURTON SHEEP SALES.

There was a, -very large and important entry of sheep at the Ashburton Yards on Tuesday, and a large number of buyers were attracted. Mr J. T. Ford (for Messrs Miles and Co.) submitted some good lines, which were readily sold at prices ranging 6s 6d to 7s 6d for /at crossbred ewes; fat Lincoln ewes, 8s ; crossbred wethers, 4-tooth, up to 11s 3d ; a line of 800 merino ewes was sold at 5s per head, while a line of 300 crossbred lambs realised 6s lid. A line of boilers realised 2s per head, i Mr B. G. Stavely (for the N.Z Loan and Mercantile Agency Company) sold 13,000 merino ewes from the Amuri country at the following rates :—2OOO at 4s 2d, 600 at 4s 2d, 2000 at 4s 3d, 600 at 4s 2d, 200 at 4s, 4000 at 4s. The remainder, about ? 2000, were knocked down to one buyer at 3s 7d per head, GREYMOUTH STOCK SALES. Gbeymotjth, April 16. Cattle—Local bullocks, N £7 10s to £4 15s; New Plymouth, £7 5s to £5 ss; average, £6 3s; best beef, 18s per 1001 b; other, 16a per 1001 b. Sheep—Local crossbreds, 13s to 11s 6d; Canterbury, 13s 9d to 13s; merinos, 6s 9d to 5s 3d; mutton, per lb; lambs, 8s 6d to 10s 6d.

AUSTRALIAN MARKETS.

Sydney, April 15. Only New Zealand wheat is in the market at present, and there is a temporary overplus, but prices are maintained.

Melbouene, April 15. Active speculation is going on in wheat. The present quotation is os 9d.

Oats are ia much request. Heavy New Zealand, 4s to 4s o£d; Tartarian, 4s 3d to 4s 4d.

ENGLISH MARKETS

London, April 18. Weston and Westall, salt and soda merchants, report., Black Horse salt, fine quality, 33s 9d per ton : coarse, 24s fid.

New Zealand wheat on the passage averages 35s 6d; forward business is weak at a decline. Arrivals of foreign cargoes are moderate. Up to date 181,000 bales have been catalogued at wool auctions, of which 127,800 have been sold. Tallow is flat. At the auction to-dav 1725 casks were offered and 350 sold. Medium mutton realised 2ds od, medium beef 23s 6d.

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, have received the following cable message from London, dated April, 12th, 18S9:—

Tallow—The market is dull. Good beef and mutton tallows are worth 25s and 26s per cwb respectively. Frozen Meat The market for mutton has a hardening tendency. Wellington is worth-4|:-d and Canterbury 4£d per lb. The beef market is unchanged.
