The District Court at Auckland was erased for two days hearing tho action County Council v. Standard Insurance Company, to recover £2OO on a bond issued by the company in respect o£ G. V. Bates, The defence was principally that the plaintiff county had not observed the conditions of the contract, in that checks of cash balances and yearly audit of tho accounts had not been applied to •tost Bites’s accuracy and honesty. The jury found for defendants with coats. The Yon. Archpriest Garin, one of the first French missionaries to New Z-abn i, who landed in.the cdony in 1840, .md who has been priest of Nelson since 1850, died on Sunday morning. He was in his C9th year. Ris exertions in educational matters, especially in establishing Si. Miry’s Orphanage, are well known. Tin Archbishop of Wellington and several leading citizens were among his curly private pupils. The deceased, who belonged to the Vfarist. order, was h gh y eateemed and respected by all classes of the community,
