Sydney, April 9. The Legislative Assembly last night passed a resolution approving of the payment of members by 45 to 5. The motion to remove limber duties was rejected by 60 to 6. April 10,
In the Legislative Assembly this evening, the Hon. W. McMillan, Colonial Treasurer, delivered his Financial Statement. He said Government did not intend to interfere with the existing tariff at present, but that next session the Colonial Treasurer would submit proposals for simplifying the tariff with a view to making it as nearly a Freetrado tariff as is possessed by any country in the world, and, at the same time, he would present a scheme of direct taxation. No duties would be removed till the House had assented to the new taxation, The deficit stood at £1,608,236. There was also a deficit of £37,000 from last year. The estimated revenue and expenditure for tlie year 1889, as made by the Hon. Mr Burns in his last statement, would still hold good. Mr McMillan said further that the Government expected a credit balance at (be end of the financial year of £25,192. The Government proposed to deal with the deficit by issuing Treasury bills in the colony on the security of suburban lands, and hoped to extinguish it in five years. April 11.
In the Legislative Assembly last night, a Bill to establish reciprocity between the various Australian colonies with regard to judgments obtained in Courts other than the Supreme Courts was read a second time. The Bill enables a creditor in any cclony to have a judgment entered and execution issued against a levanting debtor in another colony. In the Assembly this afternoon Mr J. N. Brunker, Minister of Lands, introduced the new Land Bill. The measure generally is of a liberal character, and increases the area under which conditional purchasas may be made. Provision is made for the suspension of the conditions in cases of illness, droughts, and floods, Bents will be subject to reappraisement. The term of squatters’ leases is extended to 21 years.
