Mr J. 0. M. Weale, formerly editor of the Catholic Timas, has commenced proceedings against Archbishop Redwood, proprietor of the paper, for recovery of £250 damages for wrongful dismissal. At Wellington two firemen of (he s.s, Arawa were fined £2 for smuggling iOlh of tobacco. At Christchurch Robert Carlyle was committed for trial for breaking into the shop of Mr Alexander Adams at Papanni and stealing clothing. William Lancaster was committed for trial for forging the name of “Mary A. Mullins” to a promissory note for £lO. A largely attended meeting of Masons of the three constitutions, at which representatives from country Lodges from Camara to Invercargill were present, was held at the Masonic Hall, Dunedin, on Friday, when it was resolved “ That it is desirable that a United Grand Lodge for Hew Zealand should be formed.” ft was resolved that those present should form themselves into a Masonic Union to promote the movement. Lodge St. Andrew’s, 639, S.C., Wellington, on Thursday night, unanimously adopted the resolution in favor of a United Grand Ledge, and pledging support to the movement.
