ST. JOSEPH'S CHURCH, TEMUKA.
Tuesday last being the festival of St. Joseph, patron Saint of the above church, the day was observed in a, special manner. On this feast tho customary annual treat in connection with the Temuka nnd KerrytoTvn Convent Schools is held, nnd the one given on Tuesday was as successful as any of its processors. The altars of the church were decorated with beautiful wreaths of artificial foliage and grasses, as well as some fine specimens of artificial lilies artistically worked by the Sisters of St. Joseph, tho whole presenting a very pleasing appearance. The Rev. FatherFauvel celebrated High Mass at nine (/dock, whoa a large number of children partook of Holy Communion. The choir, which for some time past had been in careful training for tho occasion by the Sisters of St. Joseph, rendered with good effect appropriate music.
After Mass tho chi’dren wore marched into the school, which for ibis occasion i possessed no less attraction than on nrevious years. From the walls were projecting bannerettes, which with the floral decorations gave ihe interior ot the school a pleasing appearance. There were five long tables, which were loaded with an abundance of tempting eatab'es of every description—cakes, fruit, lollies, etc.—some beautiful bunches of flowers adding greatly to the prettiness of the scene. At half-past ten grace was said by the Rev. Father, after which about 200 children heartily partook of tho good things which the Sisters had provided for them. The Sisters were assisted at the tables by Mrs Carr, Misses Murphy (2), Annie Brosnahan, Demuth, Gaffaney (2), Connolly, Quinn, and Brosnahan, who were most attentive to the wonts of the youthful guests. After grace had again been said, the children adjourned into the two adjoining paddocks the boys into one and the girls into the other—where racing, wrestling, jumping, and other games were indulged in until half-past three, whan the children were treated to a spread in the paddock. The girls were in charge of the Sisters, who were assisted in getting up races, etc., by Misses Annie Brosnahan, N. Murphy. M. Hoars, and C, Popple well, all doing their host to addtotheenjoymentof thechildren. The elder boys’ sports’ were conducted by Messrs E. J. Lavery, J. Quinn, D. Dunn, and J. Polaschek, who did all in their power to make the day a memorable one. The small boys were in charge of the Sisters. Among the prizes were aeveral books presented by the Rev. Father Fauvel, and if the rev. gentleman’s example were followed, and the parents assisted the Sisters in procuring prizes, the sports would be rendered more successful. At four o’clock the children were drawn into line and marched into church, and the day’s proceedings terminated with the Benediction, ut which tho choir effectively rendered the Gregorian Benediction Service and the hymu “ Holy Patron !” Tho large gathering, amongst whom were many adults, then dispersed, all seeming to have enjoyed themselves lo their hearts’ content.
