THE YIKLD OF GRAIN IN NEW SOUTH WALES.
GOOD PROSPECTS FOE N.Z. FABMER9. Sydney, March 7, ,
The following is the Government statist s officiiil report on the wheat yield, etc. The probable consumption ot wheat during 1889 is given as 7,086,000 bushels; and the estimated yield 1,573000 bushels, leaviog a deficiency of 6,413,00!) bushels. The probable consumption, as based on the experience of the past ten years, ond the mean of tea years if the average were maintained, would give an estimated consumption of 7,424,000 bushels. To this must be added tbe quantity required for seed purposes, which is estimated at 562,000 bushels, raakiDg a total, as above, qX 7,986,000 bushels. The average conSumption per head during the past ten yßßruis given at 6.7. During the year 1888 New South Wales imported 560,284 bushels froa Viclorio, 521,324 bushels from South Australia, 456,960 bushels from New Zealand. The opinion is expressed that flour is bound to rise by t«aps. that it is unwise to force the price so that people will not buy, and that New South Wales will to absorb the whole of the New Zealaod surplus wheat supply though probably America will smid 2,000,000 bushels. In tbe course of an interview a member of one of the leading firms io the grain trade expressed the opicion that although certain prejudices eiist against. New Zealand wheat they would be beatendown by the force of circumstances, provided that the English wheat market maintains a; good tone, and that both New South Wales and Queensland are absolutely dependent for their supplies on New Zealand. Re-' gardiDg the possibility of California competing with Now Zealand, the same gentleman said that it could not do so uuless New Zealand forced the price and compelled the market to drag;. The Culifornian market is in unison with the English market, and as long as the present condition of tbe latter is maintained, Californiau growers will be unable to land wheat in Australia for less than 5s 7d per bushel. The moment the English market falls, however, say to 39*, and provided New Zealand wheat should be selling at above s*, say at 5h <?d, then U-ilifornnin growers could successfully compete with New Zealand gro /vers. Otherwise there is not much fear, although Amandin grtM would fiad favour here. It is calculated that the drought wn} entail a lobb of £900,000,
