HANMER PLAINS SANATORIUM.
A correspondent sendß us an account of a recent ceremony at the Hanmer Hot Springs. It will be observed from the tone of his communication tbat, in addition to their other virtues, the waters of these famous springs have a distinctly exhilarating effect. He says : The unofficial opening of a second bath-house at this not too well known health resort, which had been fixed for February Ist, but unavoidably postponed in consequence of an accident to the elaborate system of waterworks took place this day, and though, of course, Bhorn of nearly all the " pomp and circumstance" prepared for the original opening, was still a very imposing and affecting ceremony. Commodore was met at the door of the new bath house by Mr Forbes, the contractor, and in a few simple words was requested to open the house by turning on the water, being handed by Mr Forbes a handsome solid brass key of elegant but simple workmanship for that purpose, Commodore , in a short but eloquent speech, expressed his sense of the honor done him, and regretted the unfortunate accident which had prevented the original programme being carried out in its integrity, at the same time returning thanks to Mr Forbes on behalf of himself and fellow-bathers for his readiness and promptitude in remedying the disaster, thereby lessening so considerably inconvenience and disappointment to the many frequenters of the baths. Commodore was then " personally conducted " by Mr Forbes to No. 1 bathroom, and, handling the key with his usual dexterity, a powerful flow of hot water rewarded his exertions; and he thereupon declared the water " well and duly " laid on, which announcement was welcomed with cheers by the spectators. The health of her Most Gracious Majesty was then drank (but not in the bath waters), and, after a hearty vote of thanks to the gentleman who so kindly furnishes hot water gratis, the ceremony concluded.
The new bath-house, which is situate within a chain from the old house, will accommodate eight bathers, and has, in addition, two small waiting roomß, &c, and is altogether an improvement on the original one, and although the baths themselves are much smaller, it is believed they will be found amply sufficient for all purposes. Before leaving the beautiful ground kept in such fine order by Mr Stewart and his assistant, Mr Eraser, the company inspected the handsome marques erected by the contractor for the use of his staff, and admired them greatly for their simplicity and elegance of design. " Why, mamma; you surely are not going to that dreadful play ? " " Arabella," replied the New York matron, buttoning her gloves, her eyes moist with self-sacrificing tenderness, "I feel it my duty to see it, so I can intelligently warn you against it." When was Rome built? asked a teacher of the first class in ancient history. In the night, answered a bright little girl. In the night ? exclaimed the astonished teacher, how do you make that out? Why, I thought everybody knew that Rome was not built in a day, replied the child.
