TEMUKA TOWN BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Tomnka Town Board was held last evening. Present Messrs K. F, Gray (chairman), G. ,f. Mason, P. Coirs, and J. Blytb. MINUTES, The minutes of the lust meeting were read and confirmed, COBBBSPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: From Mr Warring, requesting his name to be struck off the roll for the Stone Store, and that of Messrs Miles and Brown to be substituted.
From the Property Tax Department, intimating that the statement of values of properties had bseu forwarded, and asking the Board to examine the roll and report if any mistakes had been made in it. From the Clerk to the Borough Council of Waimate, stating that the experience of the council was that 12 months ago the council had inaugurated the contract system instead of day labour to keep the J streets in repair. The work was not so well done as by day labor, but it was very much cheaper. It was resolved that the Clerk draw up specifications for doing the work of the town by contract, instead of by day labor. valuation. In re the letter received from the Property Tax Department, asking the Board to examine the values put on properties, it was decided to reply that several sections owned by Mr Hewlings were greatly undervalued, and that many of them would sell for double the present assessment. ACCOUNTS, Accounts to the amount of £37 8a 3d were passed for payment. otebseeb’s BEPOET. The overseer’s report was to the effect that all work in band had made good progress ; that the asphalting contract of Messrs Mouoghsn nod Laing had been completed satisfactorily ; that Mr Elkis, the successful tenderer for carting shingle to Railway Terrace, had carted 60 loads, 12 or which bad been spread on a part of the road which was much worn. There was a large cumber of boulders in the same street, and he had ordered them to be broken. Any spare time the day man had was occupied in scouring out the drain in Vino street, but those who bad received notice to cut down fences alcng this drain had neglected to do so. He presumed ha could have the fences cut at the expense of the ownera of the land. ! Ha bad written to the clerk of the Waimate Borough Council as to the advisability of letting the keeping of tbs streets by tender instead of day labor. The answer would be laid before them. He also directed attention to the fact that the drain at the back of Mr Augland’s Hotel was in a very offensive state. It was resolved to have the drain covered in. It was resolved to authorise the overseer to cut down the fences in Vine street at the expense of property owners. NIGHTSOIL. The Overseer submitted his specifications for the removal of nightsoil, and they were adopted. It was resolved to call for tenders for tho removal of night soil. The meeting then terminated. Joseph Henry Bently, who was arrested at the Bluff on March Ist charged with larceny as a bailee, was yesterday remanded to Wellington. Eley s ammunition is to be used at tho forthcoming meeting under the auspices of the N.Z, Rifle Association. An information has been laid against C. M, Gray, a member of the Christchurch City Council, for assaulting P. Selig, of tho Referee newspaper. Dr. Stockwell, a well known medical practitioner, and formerly health officer for Auckland, died on Tuesday, aged fifty-seven years.
