TE KOOTI'S VISIT TO POVERTY BAY.

Auckland, Feb. 21. \ Mr Mitchelson yesterday tele*s>hed to Mr Bush, R.M., Tauranga, instructing him to follow Te Kooti, and deliver a message strongly urging him to return, and not proceed to Poverty Bay. Mr Bush replied last night stating that he found Te Kooti at Poroporo, four miles from 'Whakatane, and delivered the message. Te Kooti replied that the Minister talked over the matter very fully, in Auckland, but he still felt that he must go to Poverty Bay, as he was getting old, and did not know when he might die. He strongly wished to see his friends before death. He added he was like the master of a vessel, who looked out for breakers ahead before crossing the bar. If there was too heavy a sea he would put;back. This, interpreted meant that if strongly opposed, he will turn back, rather than risk any breach of the peace. Mr Bush addsTe Kooti means to do his utmost to reach Poverty Bay, and will not defer the ▼isit. He leaves this morning for Waimana, then will pass through Opotiki. To-morrow he goes to Marmutu, seven miles beyond Opotiki; on the Gisborne road, and proceeds on Friday to Poverty Bay. _Te Kooti’s party has been largely increased by local natives. One hundred and eighty horses were tethered round the encampment, but the whole may not accompany him. There were no kind of arms of any description. Mr Mitchelson says Te Kooti adhering to the -line of route proposed will not take near Gisborne. The have evidently arranged for this visit, as large quantities of potatoes have been planted along the route. The Government have received a number of telegrams from leading men in Poverty Bay, pressing for arms and ammunition to be sent up, and ball cartridge issued to volunteers. They have declined to take any such stops, and informed the senders they_ looked to them to aid in repressing excitemeht §nd not to encourage it. [Further particulars Te Kooti s proposed visit will be found on our fourth page.]
