TEMUKA TOWN BOARD.

A special meeting of the above board was held last evening. Present —Messrs Gray (chairman), Mason, Clinch, Blyth and Coira. TENDERS. For the contract of carting shingle for the railway terrace, H. Elkis was the only tenderer. The amount of his tender was Is 4d per yard, and on the motion of Mr Blyth it was accepted. nightsoil. The chairman read the opinion of theJloard’s solicitor, Mr Aspinall, in reference to the power of the board to levy rates for nightsoil. Mr Aspinall s opinion was that the board had full power to levy a special rate for nightsoil purposes. Mr Lee, Chairman of the Arowhenua Town Board, interviewed the board on the subject of the nightsoil. They were dissatisfied with the way things were. Some people would mot tender because they had not a horse and harness. He believed his board would assist m getting a horse and harness. He had read that the cause of the typhoid fever in Australia was negligence with regard to nightsoil. . ... . ~ The chairman did not think it would be wise to buy a horse. Mr Lee said there were many who would tender only they had no horse. The chairman said the Temuka board had bought the cart and paid for its repairs. Mr Lee’s board ought to pay a share of the cost of the cart. >Mr Lee said he could not undertake anything specially, but would lay the matter before his board. He believed his board would be willing to strike a rate, and meet them in any reasonable way. Everyone would be most willing as far as Wilkin street, but further than that he would not vouch for. On the motion of Mr Blyth, seconded by Mr Clinch, it was resolved —“ That the clerk be instructed to prepare specifications for removing nightsoil and submit them at the next meeting.” BATES AND BENTS. A list of defaulting ratepayers and leaseholders was submitted, and it was resolved that all rates and rents not paid by the,6th of March be sued for without further notice, and that a notice to that effect be inserted in the Temuka Leader. AfIPTTATiT # On the motion of Mr Mason it was resolved that the money for asphalting on private property be collected at once. The meeting then adjourned.
