AUCTIONEERS' REPORT.

TIMARU. Messrs Grade, Maclean and Adam report for the past fortnight, ending Saturday, as follows: — Horses—Our entry of 47 on the 2nd inst, was a much larger one than we have had for some time, and consisted principally of medium to good draughts. The demand was a decided improvement on late sales, and 26 head of all classes changed hands. To-day, with a small entry, we sold 12 head, and quote medium to good draughts at from £l6 to £2B; inferior, £8 to £l2 ; spring cart horses, from £l2 to £ls; hacks, medium, £8 to £ll 10s; light and weedy, £3 to £6 10s. Sheep—At Pleasant Point, on the 4th, there were only a few lots forward, most of which were sold at satisfactory prices. At Washdyke the entries of fat and stores have been remarkably small. We have several inquiries for 2 and 4-tooth wethers and ewes, and owners who wish to sell could do so at the present time to advantage. Our sales are, at auction and privately, 30 ewes at 7s, 52 do at 7s 3d, 980 half-bred ewes, 350 fat crossbred ewes, 1100 fat wethers, 400 do lambs, Cattle —At Pleasant Point several small mixed lines were penned. Yearlings and six quarter olds met with fair competition, store cows being almost unsaleable. At Washdyke the supply of fat and stores has fallen off very much of late, so much so that butchers and graziers hare to look elsewhere for their requirements. We sold 4 heifers at £4 2s 6d, 5 do at £3 8s 6d, 6 do at £2 ss, 12 head at 365, cows at 255, 40s, and privately 35 head prime fat bullocks and heifers at equal to 17s per 1001 b. Pigs—Yery few coming forward We sold 10 porkers at 17s, 4 do at 225, 4 do at 15s.

Skins—"We held our regular sale on Wednesday last, when we submitted a small catalogue to the usual buyers, Best f ull-woolled crossbreds realised 4s to ss; merinos, 2s to 3s 6d; butchers’ pelts. Is to Is lOd; lambskins, Is lOd to 2s 6d. Privately we placed 1000 factory lambskins and 1100 pelts.

CHRISTCHURCH WOOL SALES,

Cheistchuech, Feb. 8. The fourth series of wool sales this morning were stopped, as the buyers refused to bid less than |d, and the brokers not meeting them they retired in a body. The brokers proposed recommencing the sales at two, but the buyers have dispersed after unanimously agreeing neither to attend the sale nor buy more wool in Christchurch this season unless farthing bids are adopted and the half crown charge for delivering wool to ship is discontinued. LATEEr The wool brokers submitted a compromise re bidding but the buyers refused to accept anything but farthing bids, and withdrew in a body.

ENGLISH MARKETS.

London, February 7. Australian mutton, Net: Zealand mutton, 3fd to 4d; beef, 3fd to 4*d. At the wool sales to-day the. tone was very firm, Port Philip greasies fetching Is B|d. Imports to the United Kingdom for January show an increase of nine and a quarter per cent., and exports show an increase of ten and a quarter per cent. Tallow is quiet. Mutton is quoted at 35s 6d j beef, 34s 6d. Hides, 3|d. Tin is quoted at £97. February 8. Colonial stocks generally are weaker, owing to the failure of the South Australian loan. Australian wheat, ex warehouse,. 41s 3d per quarter. New Zealand long berried wheat, 40s 9d per quarter, with market weak. Beet sugar is quoted at 13s 6d. Copper, £7B per ton. Iron, best Scotch pig No. 1, Clyde, 41s 6d. February 9. The tallow market is somewhat easier, and there is a decline of 2a per cwt on both beef and mutton. New Zealand hemp is quoted at £3B 10s. At the wool sales there is keen competition, and prices receive'd approach the highest rates obtain ed at the December sales, except for (short and heavy merinos.
