GERALDINE TOWN BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of this board was held on Tuesday evening last. Present—Messrs W. S, Maslin (chairman), J. Mundell, A. Sherratt, J. Williams, E. Taylor, A. White, and N. Dunlop. MINUTES, The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. correspondence. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows: — From Dr Foster re Mr A. Fisher’s lease. —It was decided that the document be laid upon the table for the clerk to make further enquiries. From the secretary of the Fire Association, Christchurch, re 25 per cent reduction off premiums when a water supply had been brought into the town and an efficient brigade formed, stating that when this had been done the request of the board, with regard to a reduction, would receive the consideration of the association.—Mr Dunlop proposed, Mr Williams seconded, and it was carried —“ That the board consider the letter from the Fire Association favorable, and nroceed to carry oat the work of water supply as per resolution dated December 19th, 1888.”—[The resolution was as follows:—“That in the event of the reply from the Fire Association being favorable, granting the concession of 25 per cent off the present rates of insurance, this board will construct a water race through the town, with tanks; further, will undertake the formation of an efficient fire brigade to be under its own supervision.”] —It was decided to write to the Minister of Lands re acquiring the right of occupying certain parts of the riverbed for a water supply.— It was also decided to write to the Geraldine Road Board re using road. Mr G. Bethune wrote asking for the market reserve to be transferred to Mr M, Burridge. Decided to make the transfer, provided Mr Burridge was agreeable. From the Minister lor Public Works, advising the hoard of the abolition of the Public Works Department. From the secretary of the New Zealand Exhibition, requesting the board to contribute towards the same. —Letter to lay upon the table. From the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, enclosing a list of recipients of charitable aid in the Geraldine district, and asking the board to suggest reductions. The list was carefully gone through, and several alterations and reductions made. OVERSEER’S REPORT. The overseer’s report was read and dealt with as under : “I have the honor to report for your information that very little surface labour has been employed during the month. The main road was in a very bad state, owing to the large stones working up, but, according to instructions, I had them removed. The valuation list has been compiled during the month, and advertised open for inspection till Feb. 15th in accordance with the Act. It will be necessary to write to the Resident Magistrate requesting him to hold an assessment court at an early date. I have been up to O’Brien’s re cutting, and he has cut a small cutting straight down from his house, throwing the stuff in the water table, which will be i washed away the first heavy rain. Mr O’Brien not being at home when I called, I have arranged to meet him another day. The roads all over the district are now in a fairly good state. “Receipts for the month have been: Rates, £2O 11a Gd; licenses, £8 ss; asphalt, £5 17s; dog fees, 45s ; rents, 5s j total, £37 3s 6d.”— I am &c., “ C. E. Sherratt, “ Clerk and Overseer.” A list of defaulting ratepayers and of those against whom summonses had been issued was laid upon the table. It was decided to summons right through the list, irrespective of persons or amount. It was decided to endeavor to have the Assessment Court held in MarchLAMTLIGHTING. Complaints were made as to the manner in which the lamplighting was carried out, and it was decided to draw the attention of the contractor to the same.

BATHING. Notice was drawn to the letters appearing in the Geraldene Guardian of a late date in reference to persons bathing below the traffic bridge without proper costume, and it was decided to take strict measures to hare the practice stopped. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £26 Os 2d were passed for payment, and a meeting of the BOARD OF HEALTH was held. The Inspector of Nuisances’ report was read, but it necessitated no action being taken, and the meeting terminated.
