Melbourne, January 28. The President of the General Conference (Wesleyan) has decided that he cannot suspend, as requested, the transfer of ministers from one conference to another. ! January 29. Messrs Dowling and Sons, of "Victoria, won the International Champion Prizes for wool at the Melbourne Exhibition. Sydney, January 28. Five business premises at Dubbo have been burned. The damage is estimated at £2O (sic). «?*> January 29. Welcome rains are falling in the colony generally. A water supply has been struck on Dunlop station, Loutfy which will save 30,000 sheep from perishing. The captain of the American ship Southern Cross, which arrived from New York to-day, reports that on Sunday last the Chinese cook belonging to' the vessel barricaded the galley without any apparent cause, and commenced firing with a revolver at all and sundry. All the efforts of both the captain and mate to induce the man to come out were without avail, and as he was believed to be insane, the officers, in order ! to protect themselves and the crew, opened fire and killed him. The Legislative Council rejected the Loan Bill and Parliament has in consequence adjourned till Thursday, when the Premier will make a statement as to the intentions of the Government/. January 29. The Federal Council opened this morning. His Excellency the Governor, in his address to the delegates present, expressed a hope that before next meeting the whole of the colonies would join the Council, The Hon. T. Playford, Premier of South Australia, was elected President.
